I now own a paid off house, and I also have almost paid the mortgage off on my condo. Would that be considered "big boy" enough for you? Or should I perhaps own a city block to appease you? I don't fully disclose anything because you guys really don't need to know this stuff, but I see that in doing so you tend to assume that I am spending every penny on a car and not looking at my future. I assure you, I had over a month of speaking with advisors/planners weekly wile I waited for a single penny, and that gave me a lot of time to see what I was going to do.

As for the M3, I'd love to keep one, but I do believe this specific one is unsuitable due to rarity/external upkeep. I feel like BMW was able to pressure me into a sale with a lot of pep talk and the reassuring point that "you will never see one like this again", and that did get me stareyed (on a side note, BMW Gallery is quite rude/impolite to potential customers, I have never been treated so poorly at a dealership before). I know some guys even winter drive normal E92 M3's, but the maintenance/fuel economy is bitterly painful (9L of 10W-60 oil every 7000km, 400km per $80 in gas, and M parts are outlandishly expensive). I have also found driving one, that you really never can get to "enjoy" them wile following any road rules (hence you saw me spinning mine up, it was a new toy, I wanted to see it in action). The peppy nature of the engine means you will be going 70 by the time the engine reaches it's 8400rpm redline in 1st gear, and before about 5000RPM it really lacks any power, making it unpleasant for stop/go traffic and merging, people in residential also give you sour looks and shout at you when you downshift to slow down, because it's loud and obnoxious (if you've never heard an E92 downshift, it's a very violent revmatch). In stark contrast, my 335i had a ton of low end torque thanks to the twin small turbos, wile the 3L inline 6 could hold it's own once the boost began to bleed off, making it a very suitable city car, and it was nice and quiet until you laid into it, the fuel economy with my modifications was terrible however. I am more partial to the B8.5 Audi styling over the new F30 BMW styling (something about how the hood arbitrarily ends before the front bumper gets me, and the interiors have just gone downhill), and the N55 single twin-scroll turbo in the newer 335/435 (cheaply built in comparison to the N54 from the early models, least tuning potential), as well as I would prefer quattro for yearly use. The supercharged V6 really peaks my interest because of it's tunability, the glorious whine of the supercharger on a intake, and the quad exhaust really turns my brow, it to me is a low-key car until you get close to it and notice it's subtle accents. The M3 is very "look at me", and I don't really appreciate the attention.

As for the M3, I bought one mainly because of what friends had said (I know a fair few owners who DD them), and because it was dad's dream car. But driving it, I really realize it's a car for someone with a 6 car garage and a private office with a view at work. My dad was a fairly well off man, and I now understand why he never ended up buying one, and instead stuck to BMW Z series. It's unfortunate I couldn't have realized what I know now prior to buying it, but sometimes you have to learn the hard way. I enjoy my cars, and drive them every day, and I would hope that a S4 would be able to mix the practicality of an A4 with the fun factor of the M3, and that I would be excited to drive it every day, as I was with my 335i (the only reason I am getting rid of the 335 is because they are unfortunately very unreliable cars, and I am tired of working on it, especially when I have nowhere to work until things settle). I also like uniformity in vehicles, going from one to the other often leaves me feeling not quite right (as in DD'ing the A4/335 and then hopping in the M for a cruise, you really start to get annoyed at the missing features).

The reason I would rather swap out now instead of later as mentioned is because the less miles/potential damage I incur (frozen paint CAN NOT be repaired, dents/dings/chips are PERMANENT damage and require extensive paintwork to cover) on the M3 means the better the deal Audi cuts me, as well as the M hasn't been wrapped yet, and that saves me a pile that I could invest or spend making the S4 more "mine" (I do love BBS LM rims). I am talking to them tomorrow, I am very firm on a straight across deal, I will not be paying them, and if I have to I will sell the M3 privately, the salesman I had seemed very enthralled to try and work something out for me, and he understands where I stand. I have also told him should we go through with anything I do intend to do some modifications (exhaust, intake, tune, possibly suspension) on the Audi and would like to speak to them about avoiding a TD1 status on the car.

As far as never getting to drive an M3 again, I have an E93 M3 hard top convertible in the family that is open to my use, so if the urge really presents itself there is always a change to go for a quick cruise.

Hopefully that somewhat explains my deal, sorry if that's a long read!

77010.15 / 8212.50 = 9.38 Years of meals at Mcdonalds. That being said after 9 years of owning the M or another higher end car it will still be worth something....... Depending on what you choose to eat at Mcdonalds every meal for close to 10 years a dump truck may be the best bet for you to buy.

In the end if you want to get another car.... get it, realistically speaking if you are willing to spend these amounts on a car it BETTER damn well be a good daily driver.
Also, this was hilarious... Eating rotten ronnies for ~10 years exclusively is probably not a good choice!

Perfect it worked Need a lighter mood on here.

No shame in coming to the realization you have come to, I wouldn't mind trying that M for a little bit but I am sure like you I would feel terrible driving it, I wont even drive my $16,000 beetle year round as I feel terrible about it. I even think the S4 would be overkill for a DD but that might just be jealousy speaking

Don't know how the McDonalds thing was unnecessary. I lol'd.
I've driven a couple B8's with Cosmos as well as a B8.5 (just to be clear they were always driven responsibly as they were not my cars, obviously)
And I hands down would buy a B8. That's solely based on the headlights, I find the pre-facelift more attractive.
But yeah the B8.5 I drove had a killer exhaust note the B8's have all lacked. Possibly a sport exhaust but could have been stock too. But a visit to pretty much any tuning shop would remedy that disadvantage for the B8 very quickly.

When I talked to Audi they said there was no specific OEM performance exhaust, seems like the facelift is just louder. I love the facelift headlights too, but that's coming from an angel eye guy. I'm also interested in DSG, so I'd prefer a later model for less hickups.

Yeah so the B8.5 has a meaner exhaust, meh, it sounds awesome, but a proper performance exhaust on a would be way better with whichever you choose anyways.
And yeah the new headlights are pretty badass but there's something so sexy about a B8's front end in your rearview..

That there is, devil eyes are sweet! The only part that got me is they are individual bulbs, not a light tube, so they looked weird to me up close.

I was planning on putting an exhaust on, likely Miltek or APR. Only if Audi promises to not TD1 it.

Well it seems like your mind may already be made up and of course you are entitled to make your decisions and our opinions here are just that, but it seems to me like you might just need a little time to gain some perspective. You are in a position that is very financially favourable for your age and your recent loss has a tremendous impact on your life and the motives for your choices seem a bit conflicting and changeable. That being said there is no right and wrong answer here just changing cars quickly can often cost money and something like the M3 might be a collectible investment and perhaps you are not the right person to own it, but perhaps you are. Just make sure you take the time to make what you think is the best decision for you.

Worth noting on the TD1 status, from what I understand its an automated computer-ECU check, so the only way around it is not ever having your car hooked up to the dealer diagnostic system. If you are having warranty work done at the dealer, this would be nearly impossible to avoid.
That being said.. what fun would a stock car be? You certainly would have choices with both a GIAC (Tunerworks) and APR (Concept 1) dealers in town.

Re: Well now I just feel dumb

I don't have any experience driving or owning an E92 or B8 so I can't directly comment on that. But I always recalled enjoying my B6 A4 over my dad's E60 535xi. Probably because the A4 was actually mine. Personally I love Audis. They're classy, elegant, more tune-able, AWD, and just an all around a more attractive car IMO. Don't get me wrong, I love the M3 but for practicality's sake, I'd take the S4 any day. Just the fact that it's frozen would scare me out of driving it often and I imagine 3M wouldn't look quite right on the front with the frozen silver. When driving a BMW for some reason I feel like I'm driving a ticking time bomb where as I think of an Audi as a purpose built snow shredder, rally and track friendly driver's car. This stigma for BMWs could be developed through personal experience I guess.

If I was in your situation, here's what I'd do.
Since the M is in your possession and it's summer, drive it for at least a month or two to truly enjoy it and figure out if I really like it (road trip!!!). If you do, keep it. If not, sell/trade it in. Assuming you're already leaning towards the S4, own an S4 and maybe build a cool toy like an E30 for your summer torque fix. Good luck with your decision... I'm excited to see the S4!

You can have the ECU flashed back to stock and avoid detection. All other bits and pieces (exhaust, intake) do not place you in a td1 situation
