Just wrap the "beacon" in your car in tin foil and you will be invisible... so many easy ways to defeat this kind of idea... lol

If they did that it'll never go through. People who live in some of those areas run the city.

I don't think I worded that properly, what I was suggesting is that people who live in those areas have lots o money, which in turn makes me think they are or know influential people.

Highways are provincially owned.. so we all pay tax on them.

yea it's pretty simple really. you live outside of calgary but work in the city? you pay. calgary is an expensive city to live in so your choice to live in a less expensive town is great for your bank account but awful on calgary taxpayers.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

So city limits are Range road 30 on the west side, I live on Range Road 31A, I should be paying tolls to drive into the city. I think not.

Tolling is not the way, the system is flawed already, it needs a revamp, not another tax.

Talking about Airdrie I assume, right? What about those who live in more expensive places then Calgary, they shouldn't pay toll?

that doesn't really matter. it's about people who don't live in calgary, using calgary's services, who don't pay taxes here. i would have to say that without calgary, those outlying towns wouldn't really have much to offer. they depend on calgarians more than the other way around. sure it could have easily been airdrie that became the super city, but then we as airdrians would be complaining about calgarians destroying our roads and them not paying for it. and it's not just the roads. my wife works with a gal who lives in airdrie but uses her parents address to get her kids into a calgary school, that she doesn't pay for either. i guess her parents are paying the taxes, but to me, it's all about abusing the system that's in place, and benefiting from a city who obviously has better services, that she's not paying for. i've been to airdrie. seems to be a lot of money there. nice schools, roads and new developments. i don't know what you pay for taxes there, but when half the town seems to be commuting to calgary daily, it's easy to have a pretty town.

and yes, if you live outside of the city limits, ie: RR31A, you pay. cities that have dual fare transit zones charge you more for living outside the border. therefore it doesn't matter if you live across the street from it. the thing with transit though, is you have the option of walking a few blocks to the single fare zone. your house, unless it's on wheels, is stuck there. and that's your choice for living there. it's sucks, sure, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere, and the city limit is that line.

i don't mean to sound like i'm picking on airdrie (actually, i hate airdrie) but obviously this is just a discussion and people will have different opinions about it, especially those who live out of town. but when you live within calgary city limits, and your taxes keep increasing to pay for services that non-calgarians use regularly, it sucks too.

as for those rich, influential people, they shouldn't mean anything either as it's the voice of calgarians who tell council what to do. not out of towners. sadly, because of our own voting apathy, the idiots seem to be telling us what to do.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

^^ You had me at "I hate Airdrie" haha. The city limits are ever expanding. So even those who are a meter away will soon be a part of the city. I know that within a few years the neighborhood I live in with my parents will soon be paying taxes to Calgary instead of Rockyview.

I can understand disliking out of towners adding traffic to your roads, it's like me when in towners go to the golf course and abuse the rural roads and act like complete dicks cause they got lost and are going to be late for their tee time

It is probably getting time for the powers that be to consider establishing a Greater Area system where communities still run themselves such as Airdrie, Cochrane and Okotoks but also contribute and pool funds and resources into the larger greater area system. London for instance is made up of 32 boroughs which administer things like council tax and certain services locally, but obviously work together on a lot of issues as well or partner with other boroughs on specific matters. London obviously is much bigger population wise and the area covered is greater than the Calgary city area but the Calgary metro area is immensely larger so I think this will be an issue that will need to be addressed at some point in the future.
