  • Best Bang For Your Buck OBDII Code Reader?

Title pretty much sums it up. I tried getting VAG-COM lite on my laptop but my computer is so shitty I gave up..
Looking at spending like $50 just a little code reader to tell me what the code is and to clear codes.
If anyone has one they don't want, I want it!!

Borrow my vagcam cable if you like. VCDS should run on the crappiest computer...
It is lent out at the moment though - so not so good if in a rush.

For VW / Audi best bet is Vagcom

I have some handheld units from Launch and OTC which would fit your budget

I have a cable and I got the program but I can't download the drivers to operate it because my computers wifi range is about 10 feet and it needs to be plugged into the car to get the drivers. I guess I could buy a new cable of it comes with a CD with the drivers on it like I've heard they do.

I bought a WIFI OBDII dongle on alibaba from China for like 20 bucks shipped. Then I bought DashCommand app for my iPhone. Reads and clear codes and much more . Haven't got it to read the boost correctly but it works well enough for what I need.

Vag Com is the best solution and really a must have. Vag also will run on a very crappy computer!! You don't need to be plugged into your car to download drivers for you cable. PM me your email and i will send you a range of drivers for most Vag cables. If you go the WIFI route make sure you get a dongle that has an on/off switch. Surprising how fast one will drain a battery. There are some of the latest Dongles that use Bluetooth Low Energy that if you have a current phone that are a real nice solution that uses very little power and will connect to your phone continuously if you want.

You do not need to be plugged into the car, you need the cable plugged in, but not terminated. If you are having an issue getting it running, come out to a meet and bring your laptop, someone can help you out I am sure. You could also use your phones network for a couple minutes while you download the drivers if you insist on pluggin into the car
I may appear to be nice, but don't be fooled, I probably don't like you

Wow thanks for all the replies guys! I'll probably give the Vag Com another shot with the drivers from intocco and maybe pick up a wifi interface like what rod has. Love that you can just get the readout on your phone! Very clever!
And natty thanks for pricing out a hand scanner for me!
