In search of a good lawyer

My father passed away two days ago at the age of 52, leaving behind only me. His girlfriend and her illegitimate child (whom she had with another man wile with my father) is trying to lay claim to everything. I believe she is hiding his will (which he drafted when his father died, leaving everything to me). I don't want to cause problems with her, but I cannot let her take everything (including my education savings, and his rcmp life insurance).

Does anyone know of a good lawyer in Calgary that charges a fair rate, as I think I'm going to need help here.

Sorry to hear that Kyle, not something easy to deal with and then throw the other stuff on top makes it even more difficult. You got it though, just takes time.

I have used Caron and Partners for a few years for my business. http://caronpartners.com/ (their website is down right now) 403-262-3000. I'm pretty sure they have a family law group. They aren't cheap, but I have been quite happy with what they have done for me.

Sorry for your loss Kyle and I hope you are able to find a good lawyer to help you get things sorted as best as possible. In my only experience with a similar situation far too much of the money ended up going to all the lawyers involved so consider all your options carefully.

Unless there is a lot of money involved, the normal lawyer route will simply end in all of the money going to the lawyers, in my experience.

Perhaps you can try legal aid. If she is only a girlfriend and you are his next of kin, it should be simple. She has no legal right to anything.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, Heather and I send our condolences.

I argee that legal aid should be able to handle this pretty easily, also for the life insurance, if you were named on the policy that is not something that can be fought over, so you may have some relief there.
Also, if you can find out what lawyer your dad drafted his will with, they should have a copy on file.
