  • Poor Eurovan

So my poor van was the victim of an inexperienced 16 year old driver while parked in front of my house. He slid around the corner and side swiped the rear corner with his rear passenger door. So after an estimate of over $7k to repair ($3k for the bumper alone) the insurance told me parts are not available. In the end I get a cash out and get to keep it but I will no longer be able to have comprehensive coverage. After removing the rear bumper it is all really easy to fix. I will need to plastic weld everything back together and get some paint done. The damage to the rear trunk is hidden under a aftermarket hatch cover (which also needs repair).

Buuuuut the wife now wants to sell it. I say spend a little and fix it up and rock it till it dies. Anyone thing that running without comprehensive is a bad idea? I think that it would save me more to drive it then sell it for beans now anyways. Opinions?

curious as to why your insurance company is going to drop your policy due to someone else. it really should have nothing to do with your ins. company. there would be no reason for them to take that away from you. it's the kids fault and his ins. would need to sort it out, regardless of parts availability. and if those can't be bought, the van isn't written off, then i don't see a problem. they are paying you out the cash so why no more comp.? is it because your ins. now knows that repaying you for an accident would not be an option based on those unavailable parts? sucks, but i would probably run without it. even if someone else hits you, they would still have to pay. seems odd.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

The problem of no comprehensive is mountain goats, horses, cows, deer, vandalism, theft, fire, flood, wind debris, hail...

I'm pretty sure you will have to deal with one of those sooner or later. Have you tried calling Canadian Direct? they usually offer better coverage than other companies, maybe you can get comp with them?

When a 16yo swiped my red coupe, I leaned on him and his parents to pay me an agreed value less than the cost of the quote but appropriate for sourcing parts and paying for repairs. I get to keep the car and have no salvage title, he doesn't get dinged on his insurance. Win, win.

The problem is the salvage title. Not too many people will pay anywhere near market value for a vehicle with a salvage title. My E30 went through this. Still haven't got it fixed enough to pass the inspection, but it's my plan to fix and keep.

No salvage title. Just a payout as parts are not available. I have a very rare aftermarket (and dealer sold) body kit. Hence the price of the repairs. Not really that much damage that quickly added up to over $7k for a 15 year old vehicle lol.

So can you just through on standard bumpers with your payout and get it covered w/ comprehensive again?
