i just picked up a massive new toolset at crappy tire after christmas that was 700 bucks down to 180! thats a win.. a new smaller torque wrench last week for doing small bolts under 45nm for 60 bucks from i think 180 normally

bought my flex head gear wrenches when they were on sale from them too

honestly like others said wait for the sales and hit them up.. sadly now i need a new toolbox haha

I've always had good luck with Mastercraft Maximum for hand tools, especially when they're on sale.

Princess Auto has good tools where things like engine hoists, and bench vices or extension cords, etc are concerned.

Both places are awesome for returns.

Re: Best Place to Buy Tools?

I worked in the automotive trade for a bit and yes there are snap on tools and princess auto tools that work. I won't buy sockets (Under 24mm), ratchets, or powerfist braded impact tools from princess auto. They are ok in a pinch, but never had any luck with those.

Crappy tire I stick to maximum sockets, ratchets, 3/8 torx and Allen key sets, and find these to be a good quality with tight tolerances. I generally stick to just 6 point sockets though, I find the tolerances on the 12 points to be a little loose.

Snap on I get things like the triple square bits, ratchets, and 12 point sockets when I can find them. There is a difference, but you won't notice it on a good clean nut/bolt ect. You notice it on the worn corroded bolts, the ones in the tight spots, and the ones that were put on too tight.

Air tools I have mostly Ingersoll and Rand, all the higher end ones you don't find in princess auto or crappy tire.

If you generally work on newer cars you can get away with cheaper tools. If your cars have 315,000 and 420,000 km's and one is from out east, you can make little problems big quickly with cheaper tools.

Agree with talk about princess auto tools (sockets/wrenches/torque wrenches etc etc etc).

One time use (or a tool that I would need maybe 1x/year....ie: triple squares) for a technically easy job......princess auto

Tools for jobs which have complication of having major costs associated with F ups........internet + buy the best shiet.

Everything else.......Canadian Tire (lifetime warranty, no hassle policy in terms of exchanging a broken tool...even when used for weird purposes).

edit: Air tools wise I have used Campbell Hausfeld for 10 years without issue. Quite happy with the setup. (8 gallon tank, purchased from Canadian Tire, have used it for automotive applications as well as housing use)

Re: Best Place to Buy Tools?

Most of my tools are Stanley, Mastercrap Maximum and Powerfist. For me, they do the job. That being said, at my old job when I used to use tools heavily every day, nothing compares to Snap-On, Mac, and Klein Tools. Personally I prefer Klein Tools screwdrivers and they can be obtained at Home Depot.

could not agree more on the comment on cheap sockets and wrenches.
you might save a few bucks, but when they strip or round and you're now stuck with a bolt thats screwed....its going to cost you far more in time, money and aggrivation to fix than what it was worth to save
