  • Windows Wizards? $25 Bounty (Charity/You!)

    I'm offering $25 for either yourself, or to your favorite charity, if you can solve this Drive Sharing problem I am having.

    I'm having a heckuva time sharing a drive (G: Big Media) that I added to my Main PC last week. It has old media data (movies etc ) that were on my previous HTPC (decommissioned). I now have a HTPC, that has been networked to my Main PC (Power PC), using Microsoft 7's Home Group. It restricts me from sharing it with the Home Group, and I cannot figure out why.

    * Windows 7 - 64 bit on Power PC
    * Windows 7 - 32 bit on HTPC
    * Firewall is off.
    * I am owner of the drive; as well as administrator etc;
    * ESET is the virus protection
    * MSE is off

    Below are snapshots of my rights, and sharing attempts.

    Thanks for any & all help.

      Rod,
      Oops that could have been more clear. Added in "Ultimate"

      * Windows 7 Ultimate - 64 bit on Power PC
      * Windows 7 Ultimate - 32 bit on HTPC

        Another snapshot of me attempting to share a folder with specific people within the Home Group (chose each user individually and consistently received the error "Your folder can't be shared")

              By PowerPC I am assuming U are talking about a Mac with the old powerPC processor?

                Try putting a password protect on the share.

                  Why is there a lock next to the video folder icon? Is there something set under general properties, or is there a file within the fold/subfolders that is secured in some way? This would prevent sharing the folder.

                    Can you access the drive in the windows explorer bar \\(Computer name)\(Drive share name) on another machine. ex:\\bobscomputer\g

                    Also in the security permissions from the screen shot of video properties, ensure you add "Everyone" to that group.

                    If you're sharing the drive outside your network, you need to enable port forwarding on your router, but not inside the network

                      Did you google it because there were like 30 suggestions on the first page when I googled "Your folder can't be shared" or the other errors you saw etc

                      In all likelyhood its one of the following:

                      - Security is too tight (router, firewall, anti-virus, etc)
                      - Some services are not running or broken

                      Usually its something like your antivirus or some other app has configured your firewall or services in a not-good way. Disable your AV and check your firewall rules, turn on any services that seem suspicious. Reset your firewall rules (can download an app or file to do this).

                      Here is one such link that may help

                        If you are not using a PowerPC Mac with windows 7 running in some sort of virtual machine then try this:

                          I've turned it both on & off. No luck.

                          Sorry no. Both PC's have Windows 7 Ultimate. (one is 32bit the other 64)

                          Tried with both. It's not the network, as much as the drive itself that won't let itself be shared. Somehow the administrative rights won't apply to this drive , and I don't know how else to give absolute ownership to the drive.

                          That was me copying an pasting data from the (G: Big Media ) drive, to my (E: Data) drive. It retained the "locked" administrative right from it's previous location.

                          I haven't tried that, but will try when I get home - guessing it won't let me though. It's being accessed within the same simple, 2 PC network (Windows Home Share), so no need to port forward.

                          Exhausted my Googling (which is why I posted here), but did give that last link a peek too.

                          PowerPC is just what I named my main desktop pc on my network. The other is the HTPC (Home Theatre PC). As mentioned, both are Windows 7 machines.

                          Thanks for the replies gents!
                          The more I dive into it, the more I'm convinced the drive retained some sort of Ownership from the previous HTPC it was in. I've changed the owner, admin rights, ability to read/write on it extensively, but to no avail.

                          Does anyone know of a utility that can over-write any "background" administrative rights, and give absolute ownership?
