Re: Winter Warm-up Discussion: Heaters, Starters, etc

In terms of kerosene I really wouldn't bother going that route. Your winter diesel is being cut with kerosene right now for winter. Also keep in mind now that we have eliminated just about all the sulfur from our diesel it burns way cleaner. I run and own a 900,000 btu steamer/burner unit that can run on either. I looked at kerosene, but could eat the price being double for only 30% more heat, the numbers didn't add up. I have probably 5000 hours of service on this unit and nothing is gummed up and the insides still are fairly clean.

In terms of the bunk heater mentioned above keep in mind these are made to run and warm cabs for guys to sleep in their big rigs. The unit heats the air in the cab, but has a seperate exhaust and intake pipe so the none of the fumes can enter the cab. You can use diesel and still have no fumes in your cab, just saying.

one thing regardless of your method of warming up your car you need to keep in mind is that everything else is still cold.
the quickest way to warm your car up is to let it idle for a few short minutes (usually long enough to brush it off) with the heater cranked inside. Once you're done, hop in and start driving slowly, shifting below 3000rpm until you see temps coming up.
you can warm the oil, or the block all you want, but you've still got everything else cold, including transmission, bushings, etc. driving the car will generate heat evenly throughout the car and help everything warm up quickly.

idling your car for 45 minutes does nothing but waste gas, and you're still left with everything else cold. car starters are great, but if you can handle 2-3 minutes of cold, you'll be fine. heated seats are great.

that said i haven't driven my car since july....so.....
