  • Snow Tires for a Tiguan

Our Tiguan will be our primary ski vehicle this winter and it needs new tires as the last set finally had it after last winter. I have looked around and found a few choices. Anyone have and opinion on the following:

    Pirelli Winter ICE Control, non-studded
    Champiro Icepro, studded
Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT, non-studded

Pricing is pretty close to $800 all in. Including rebates, etc.

There was a member here that lives out in Kananaskis. Was wondering what he runs on his vehicle.

I believe you're talking about George aka Geobmx4life. He runs Hakka 7's I believe.

I've run the Nitto SN2's for two winters now and they've been great.

Do you run the Hakka's studded or un-studded? I'm going to be spending lots of time in the mountains this year. Maybe a trip over Rogers Pass too.

I run studs too. For the extra money it costs to get them I think the benefits highly outweigh the cons of them. Not only for getting stuck but for the control it feels like you have too. Rarely spin tires, even with all that torque.

How do you find the Hakka 7's on dry cold pavement? Seems the majority of the time that's what we're driving on in Calgary in the winter...

I'm in the Nokian camp... but General has some good deals on their Arctic Altimax and you can get them at CT or on TR studded or not. And they're supposed to be grippy skins that last longer than the Nokians/Hankooks of the world.

I have the Altimax's studded on my jeep, should have went with the nokian studded. Hakka 7 only come studded from the factory, so you can't get them studded at kaltire. The hakka 7's suck the stud back into the tire when the temp gets above freezing. From what I remember they have some sort of gel water pack behind them, when it freezes it expands and pushes the stud out.

The studs on the altimax's are way louder and different then the nokian's are. They also rip out easier then the nokian's I have noticed as well.

                          That sounds awesome!

I had ultra grips and didn't think much of them. I was out boarding in the mountains a lot last winter and when there was snow on the roads the car didn't handle well, it felt like it was floating. I was constantly having to make small to large steering corrections because of how much it slide around. I'm trying studded tires this year and shall see how that goes.

Re: Snow Tires for a Tiguan

Just remember the studs on any tire are not 2 inches long, so if you come to a stop sign that has a sheet of ice at 60 km/h you will still slide. Studs do not make make your car inifinately better then those with just regular snow tires. Let's say they make the car 10-20% better at stopping or staying on the road. That could mean the difference between staying on the on ramp, or not kissing the guy in front of you with your front end.

I know some guys are trying them out for the first time, just making sure you understand these don't give you dry cement performance on ice. Don't want to see anybody get hurt or cars wrecked, so I figured I should put this out there.
