  • Retrofit Question

Alright guys, George and I got his retrofit set up and mounted in a night. Pretty good progress. Now upon wiring and testing we can't get the hi-lo solenoid to work properly. The kit is a morimoto mini h1 kit, and we fit it into a set of mkiv golf helix reps, Patryks old lights.

Now the way the wiring harness works is power to relays, relays to a splitter connector that has one connection for ballasts and one for the hi-lo solenoid. There is also a third connector from relay for what I'm assuming is the stock switch sender.

The problem we are having is the fact that when you turn the headlights on the switch sender immediately sends power to the ballast and the solenoid telling the highs to stay on. Is it possible in the golf to have the hi-lo work properly along with the high beam reflector functioning as well?

    Re: Retrofit Question

Which harness are you starting out with? Either way if its a morimoto bi-xenon harness they are all quite similar. There are 3 pin inputs: low beam 12V, high beam 12V and ground. All 3 go back to the morimoto control box and a bunch of wires come out: +- for each high beam solenoid, + for each ballast, + to the battery.

What i think the problem is is that you have some pins mixed up, the 9004/9007 harness are identical except for the pin arrangements and if you hook up the 9004 harness (9007 harnesses usually don't exist, they are usually the same as 9004s) to a 9007 socket your high beams will be activated at all times when you turn the lights on...

What i would do is wire the low beam 12V and ground to the correct pins, and then splice a wire from your reflector high beam 12V to the required high beam 12V on the harness and when your high beam reflector lights kick on it should prompt the morimoto control box to activate the solenoids as well

      Re: Retrofit Question

The other way you could do it if you have received a low beam only kit by mistake is the following:

      - hook up up the ballasts only from the relay cubes and don't wire in the solenoids from the split off.
      - Wire up the solenoids by tapping into the respective high beam 12V and ground wires inside the headlights.
      - You will also need to splice the high beam 12V with a diode into the trigger wire for the relays (pin 85 or 86).

The last step is crucial. If you do not do the last step then the ballasts will de-energize while the solenoids energize, but never at the same time. The diode only lets the power flow in one direction so that the low beams don't turn on the high beams all the time.

Thanks for the tips Sean...we got them working...and they're amazing...a few adjustments and they'll be perfect. Also thanks to Pat for the great deal on them...and Cam for helping my wiring illiterate ASS.

            Re: Retrofit Question

We spliced the stock reflector high beam wire to the harness as you suggested, and Cam and I mumbled about at 2am...voila bixenon high and reflector high beams...and projector lows...that need some tweaking.
