  • Happy Canada day!

    A Country Is Born

The name “Canada” was established through a miscommunication. “Kanada” was an aboriginal word for “village”. The Europeans mistook it to mean the entire nation. Britain's North American colonies - Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland - grew and prospered independently. However, with the emergence of a more powerful United States after the American Civil War, some politicians felt a union of the British colonies was the only way to fend off eventual annexation. On July 1, 1867, Canada East, Canada West, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick joined together under the terms of the British North America Act to become the Dominion of Canada.
The government of the new country was based on the British parliamentary system, with a Governor General (the Crown's representative) and a Parliament consisting of an elected House of Commons and an appointed Senate. Parliament received the power to legislate over certain matters of national interest, while the provinces were given legislative powers over matters of "particular" interest (such as property and education).

How does that saying go? You learn something new everyday. I always thought Canada was the third largest in the world behind Russia and Denmark. Looked it up and Canada is number 2! Yay for Canada!!

        Happy Canada day everyone!

I'm pretty sure the Zamboni was invented by an American but regardless, there are some cool stats there. Proud to be Canadian!

Denmark?? That is a pretty small country.

Some great stats and facts there, my wife and I still get people to bring us Kraft Dinner as it is not too easy to find here and if you do it is insanely priced! I do find it weird that there is no England Day or Monarch Day here but I guess with an older nation those things are not as celebrated.

Have a fun and safe Canada Day everyone!!!

I think Denmark controls Greenland and a ton of other smaller islands. I'm not sure of what the number is but I'd have to imagine their combined total is a respectable number.

we were having this discussion while i was at school a month ago....what we celebrate is our succession from the ruling countries. USA has independence day, we have canada day, both are days in which we basically told the brits to go pound sand in one way or another.

We are a nation of Kraft Dinner, I'm surprised Kraft hasn't come out with a "Maple KD" yet!

And you're right, I always thought the Zamboni was Canadian, turns out it's from Italian from California!

This what I was thinking. Greenland is much bigger then what most people think.

Yes I looked it up and Greenland is the 12th biggest country in the world and controlled by Denmark along with some other islands, but still smaller than Russia, Canada, China, US and Australia to name a few.

I understand Canada celebrating its independence, I guess here you would need to celebrate succeeding from the Romans.

There was some street hockey at Trafalgar Square today though, usually a big celebration there every year.
