  • Camera Recommendations (P&S)

Well with holidays coming up the wife and I have decided it is time for a new camera after our last one has served us for 7 years and seen many places around the world. I am no means an aspiring photographer but I do like to get nice pictures of the sights as I visit various places, but just want something in a point and shoot format and at a reasonable price point. A good zoom is important as the Mrs always complained about the previous cameras capabilities in this area.

I am looking at something along the lines of a Canon Powershot SX260 and the previous camera was a Canon Powershot S80.

    Any recommendations are appreciated.

Canon SX280 is a great camera with alot of zoom and good low light.

Canon S110 is an awesome camera as well. Amazing quality and gives you flexibility for manual controls

If you don`t mind spending a bit of money, the best p&s on the market is the Sony RX100

Another Sony but which will be cheaper is the WX150
It's 18.2 MP and can be found for around $180

Also depending on how tough you are with your cameras, I would recommend the Olympus TG2-ihs
It's 12 MP and about $320 (and perfect for vacation stuff)

I am still liking the Canon's after doing a little reviewing and am comfortable with the price point too, but Alex maybe you can help me with the difference between the SX260HS and SX280HS. I think with Canon's summer rebate program here I can get them to be within about £35 pounds of each other, but not super clear what that difference gets me.

Blair, the main differences are that the 260 is a little older than the 280. The 280 has a little faster image procesor having a digic 6 opposed to the 260 with a digic 5. The 280 has gps for geotagging image location along with wifi for wireless file trasfer to smartphone/tablet/computer. Th 260 only has the gps function for geotagging.

The wifi function is really nice but i've never had a problem taking an sd card out of a camera and into a computer.

I would only assume Canon's 40th anniversary ends at the end of June in London as here in Canada. If you don't see yourself using the wifi function in the 280, and can save a few £'s. I would say your travels would be well captured with the 260.

              Hope that helps.

Here's a side by side comparison if you wanted a broader look at the differences.

                Re: Camera Recommendations (P&S)

My wife is pretty big into photography... so we have a lot of cameras

I highly recommend getting a small interchangable lens camera. The smaller bodies are about the same size as a medium sized P&S but you will just have a lot more fun shooting and get better photos. You don't need to buy a ton of lenses or invest a fortune in glass - just having one long zoom for example can really transform a trip to the zoo or park. After using my wife's micro 4/3 I would never go back.

Specifically go try an Olympus PEN Mini or Panasonic GF3 which are two of the smallest bodies, before you buy your P&S. The weight and dimensions are the same as the Canons you are looking at above.

You can also get steep discounts on bodies that have been out for more than a few months if you look around online. Lastly, for cheap lenses a lot of people sell their kit lenses used from various kits and you can buy one or two for almost nothing.

Yeah the thing about that though is that the lenses won't be compact nor affordable if they are Canon SLR. Plus even the smallest SLR is nowhere near the size and weight of a small MILC.

I would say that Canon would be a good contender if someone was looking at high end mirrorless cameras. But for someone looking at P&S cameras just get the cheapest and smallest MILC even 1 or 2 years old.

Thanks for the input everyone, I think I will be going with the SX280HS. I understand the value of the MILCs, but not really into purchasing glass and often need to travel very light (Euro discount airlines) so I think it will be the best option to serve us over the next couple of years. The rebate program here is on till the end of July, so I think for the little bit of money over a SX260 will get a bit more life out of it, and the WiFi may come in handy too.
