Questions about engine load and revs

I've been driving at around 2700rpm for the last tank and found a significant improvement in gas mileage than at 1800. But I do think 2700 is quite high, will it increase the pace of the engine wear faster than at 1800? So my question is will more engine load give more wear or will less engine load but higher revs wear the engine faster?
Also the 3.2FSI passat with the dsg we have shifts as low as 1300rpm and usually the revs are lower than 1600rpm in the city and it can do around 13l/100k, is there really that much of a difference in the vr6 engines?

i have heard that the lower the rpms, the harder it is on the engine. 2700isnt high at all, i usually cruise in my R mid 2000s

What speed is your engine at when you are cruising down the road at 210km/h? Or even 120km/h for that matter? Higher than 2700rpm is the answer

Hey, I don't know driving schools teach technical stuff. I was just curious about it. Like why do the passat shift as low as 1300rpm while the torque and power band is pretty much the same.

Derek Browns is not the kind of place i'm talking about. your passat shifts so low because it's an automatic transmission designed to give optimum fuel economy, much faster than your math and consumption gauge can calculate. or you're trying so hard to save gas that you barely touch the pedal. no load, it will shift. your jetta and passat are not the same engine, fuel management, or car, for that matter so there's no point comparing the two.

I can't see how any engine spinning at 2700 rpm is going to get better milage than at 1800?!?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it all comes down to the torque and power curves. Sitting at 2700RPM, you're usually way closer to the peak power and torque of the engine than you are at 1800 RPM (although it depends on the engine). The closer you are to that peak, the less effort it takes to accelerate. At 1800, you'd have to press the gas a bit more and for a bit longer to get the same acceleration.

Like I said, I could be way off but it seems logical to me haha

You're right about the torque and power band. Now I'm so jealous about the TSI people... max torque from 1500-5000rpm haha
