You could build something for $60k but it really depends on what you want to build. There are so many variables in the cost. Figure out a kind of car you want to build and then maybe we can get you some realistic guidelines for cost.

Well I didn't want to talk specific cars since it was still kind of in the "idea hatching" stage but what I have been thinking about is a sunday driver, fully restored early 1970's datsun 510 with a swapped motor from a more modern nissan.

I think quite hard to find them though and body is the biggest issue since they all rust out.

Barret Jackson etc is no help for that car

        What about a Porsche 930/964? Yes, I know -- cliche. There's a reason though.

510 could easily be done for $60k. I know of like 6-7 in southern Alberta ready for restore. Plus the 510 isn't hard to find parts for. Adding a modern drivetrain is easy (think vg30, sr20 etc) and have bolt in kits available.

In the end you can buy a very nice 510 from California already built for around $20k though. I just happen to have a friend that did this last summer.

I have seen some of the ones online for sale for 15-25k but they seem like a 8/10 sort of car most of the time, e.g. needs a lot more work.

A buddy of mine has exactly what you are talking about in Lethbridge. 510 fully restored with an SR20DET in it...

I believe he bought it ~90% done.

                    Singer is upward of $200k

Elliot's 510 was brought up from California and needed very little. It's clean, makes 420whp and couldn't be built for what he paid for it.

Yep I believe a few small things like a new wiring harness and some engine mods...

I think in most of the cases it is easier and cheaper to buy one that has already been restored..another example of this a family friend poured nearly $300k into a Charger and would maybe fetch $200k at Barrett Jackson.
