The way I see it I would love to restore AND drive a cool car. BUT I don't always get what I want. I have things like work and family and so on to take care of because I'm an adult. I would love to have a garage to work in. I would love to have time off on weekends or evenings to get my hands dirty. I am sure lots of other guys on this forum feel the same way. In fact I know it because I know a lot of you.

I don't love doing those things more than, say, keeping my job, paying the bills, or being married to my wife. So if I can only get a car and drive it, but not restore it myself, I am thinking that is better than nothing. I'll do that until I'm older/retired etc when I can do both.

Saying "i don't have any respect for a guy who pays a shop to restore an old car for him... you have a neat car to post on eurodrivers when it's done"

Well I don't have any respect for someone who doesn't understand that not everybody has the skills, time, and space to do that work. Just because you don't it doesn't mean you're not a "car guy". I think you disrespect a lot of people on this forum who just enjoy car culture and enjoy driving their cars.

Re: Anyone know much about complete car restorations?

you asked a very vague question, indicating that you have no idea what you want, and i gave you my advise based on personal experience. sorry that i didn't water it down to suit your feelings, but it's true. you should have re-stated your post to read, "i have no idea about working on cars but i want a slick resto project. i have no time, or energy, or space to do it. should i tackle this project? or buy something."

you can call it disrespect, but i don't think saying that i don't respect a guy who buys his build is a personal attack. i also don't feel the need to sugar coat my comments to a bunch of men. i have things like work, a family, and i'm also an adult. i even told you that life priorities will come first, so i to agree that i love those things more that a project.

glass houses dude. you're quite condescending to a lot of people on this forum.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

        Kor,

Where I see VAGs point of view, I am much more on your side. There are many things that I can do, but it's just not worth my time to do them, the hassle or frustration. I'd much rather spend my time with friends or at work and just pay to enjoy it in the end.

I'm a pretty die-hard "I've done everything on my car myself".

Also I don't see any problem with peoples opinions, but the no respect comment is not what we do here.

This is a discussion on getting it done, not doing it yourself.

OP stated he has no interest in doing any of the work so lets just cut to the chase. i gave him reasons why it's going to turn him off of it even more. so did you. convenience being one of them. i do understand that reasoning, but it doesn't mean that i'm supposed to respect a buyer over a builder. it's much the same way that i don't respect spoiled rich kids, compared to those who've earned their riches. i stand by my comments and i don't feel that i need to write an essay explaining the meanings behind them. i guess some people still need their hand held.

bla bla bla who cares if hes paying someone else to do it or doing it himself. i would askTyler (VW337). His dad is always restoring vehicles and might be able to recommend some places.

Re: Anyone know much about complete car restorations?

Curious as to what you are thinking of getting restored, spill the beans! As for shops in this area... no clue. I know anything like that is going to cost a real pretty penny. I can understand why you would rather have it built to your specs then go to an auction and buy someones else pre-built car unless it was all original. Being able to put all your ideas you have visioned come together in the car is much better then someone else's ideas.

I think we can all enjoy the cars whether they are built by someone else or yourself. Some people get a lot of satisfaction of having the car to enjoy and drive and mod as they please. Others enjoy building the car, then once it's done gets bored, sells and finds another project to build.

Pick something your going to love because dropping a hundred large is just a beginning.
I did 20k on a Ghia and you could'nt even tell.Stay with American muscle cheaper to restore and parts are still plenty.Only Euro i would consider is an old Dino.Expect a 3 year work in progress depending on vehicle.

And the guy who works for the money to buy the car instead of building it, how is that a spoiled rich kid. Sounds more like a person who understands the cost vs time benefit of life. To say a professional who can make upwards of 100$ per hour should do random work that costs less to pay someone trained in that area is a net loss.

I didn't mean to start a fight (once again)... seems like all my threads lately.

Anyway thanks to the people who had something constructive to offer. I looked into it quite a lot and I'm going to have to think it over. I was thinking a budget of maybe 60k + the cost of the car but at 100+ I'd definitely have to reconsider.

I don't know if they would be willing to go so in depth on a rebuild but if you have questions, give Lawrence at Stampede Collision a call. I know they have done some minor body restorations, but it would be a good place to start for specifics.

lol, your budget could get you a beetle with a subaru engine...you could even have it all done locally!

there. constructive, easy to understand and answers your question.

how about a half eaten project?

If you are serious, hit Barret Jackson. There are more cars at those events that are 75-90 % finished. You could personalize the last 25% and get a deal at the expense of previous owner.
