  • Gasoline in a diesel

I haven't made the mistake, and don't think I ever would. But lately I've heard of fuel delivery truck drivers filling the underground tanks with the wrong type of fuel most likely due to incompetence. This happened at coop after christmas and I believe it happened at the esso off of glenmore and Barlow today.

I'd imagine the gas station covering the cost of repairs, but what are the long term effects of this mistake in regards to engine reliability?

I might start to carry a Jerrycan with me and ensure I'm filling up with diesel prior to putting the nozzle into the tank

A lot less of an issue than the other way around, to my knowledge. Diesels can run on just about anything if necessary.

We lost an engine in a diesel f350 a couple years ago at work.... it is a bit of an issue.

Lack of lubrication being the biggest issue. Injectors would probably die. Definitely less of an issue though for long term effects. As I would hope as well you wouldn't burn a whole tank before realizing it.

It's like putting water in the tank. Your diesel car won't run on gasoline. Which Coop did this happen to?

Are you kidding me? Gasoline in a diesel is VERY bad, especially the new VW diesels...it'll blow the hpfp up! Diesel in a gasoline e engine usually means a shut down, followed by a complete fuel system flush.

                  Re: Gasoline in a diesel

IMO gas in diesel is a lot worse than diesel in gas. I have heard of a lot of diesels loose engines/fuel systems from gas. At the same time I know of 3 people that have run a half a tank plus of diesel through gas cars and they still ran fine after

If you ever run into this problem, all you have to do is to pull out the tank and refill it with the right fuel.

                        Re: Gasoline in a diesel

As said Gas lacks the lubricity diesel has. At the dealership I work i have seen this a lot in rental 5 ton trucks people that usually don't drive a diesel fill it with gas. Sometimes they figure out its not running right and we can drain the tank and flush the system. But a lot of times we have to replace the injectors. Injectors have real tight tolerances and really require that lubricity so they usually don't take long to prematurely fail. I haven't had that happen on a hpcr yet but imagine the pump wouldn't take to it. I remember my dads old chev diesel had 3 injector pumps replaced because chev didn't design them to run on ultra low sulphur diesel.

Whoever said diesels could run on anything is thinking old mechanicals... Not quite true but kinda. Like the old vws that run veg oil. Or I know a guy who runs filtered old eng. oil mixed with kerosine (he's alittle redneck). It will burn it. New diesels i doubt it. We have even had some issues at work with the new emission engines running on bio diesel plugging doc's and dpf's.

So ya if there is gas in it don't run it because depending on the fuel system some will cost you more some less. I don't even wanna think about what injectors would cost on my PD Tdi :(!

Anyways I could talk diesel all day....

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!, a diesel car (omg you guys know how i feel about them already ) will self destruct in such a senerio , the pump will shred and send metal into the injectors (this of course is after 2006 cars ) before 2006 the car stops running pump out the gas and refill, change the filter and have a nice day . After 2006if the car was started with the gasoline . minimum 4k damage to a crd engine ..... FAIL DIESEL

^^^This. There's a whole thread either on Vortex or GolfMk6 about a bunch of guys down in Cali who thought they were filling up with diesel but the station filled the wrong tanks. They ended up with anywhere from 4-9k in damages and the first few had to foot the bill themselves before they were able to win their court battle with the gas station.

Edit: This event also resulted in VWoA sending out bright yellow warning stickers to all newer diesel owners to put on the inside of the fuel door and around the tank nozzle saying "Diesel Fuel ONLY."
