  • Home Theatre Receiver Issues

I have a 2010 harman Kardon AVR 3600 receiver and i'm having all kinds of issues with it.
The issue is the picture (not sound) often drops out for a second or two and the screen goes black then flickers back after a few seconds. It doesn't happen all the time, but is certainly increasing in frequency and duration. last night the picture dropped out completely and even after shutting everything off it didn't come back on until i tried everything again this morning.

It doesn't matter what cable i use from receiver to TV. I've ruled out TV by testing another input source to it direct. it's not the TV input slot either causing it. It's also not input dependant on the receiver as it will do it whether i have xbox, HTPC or cable box going to it, and those use both component and HDMI inputs.

Any ideas how to track down the problem? i've tried updating the firmware on the AVR to no avail.

Really want to avoid having to buy a new receiver right now.

My friend had this issue (or similar) with his HK AVR-3700, and I believe it was cheaper to replace, than to fix. I can't fully remember, I'll get in touch with him. Picture would cut out, then back, then out, then fine for a week. Didn't over-heat or anything...

exactly the issue i am seeing.
i would find it hard to believe this is heat related. Receiver is in a cooled case and has an extractor fan sitting on top of it to ensure its cooler than if it just sat somewhere normally.
Case temps can't get much over 25*C. which is slightly warmer than ambient.

Sorry, bad phrasing on my part. I was explaining that his didn't overheat at all, stayed perfectly cool.

that's ok i understood you. i was just saying for someone to say this was heat related WOULD surprise me. i know some jam their receivers into tiny unventilated cases and wonder why they fail prematurely

            Re: Home Theatre Receiver Issues

I have a AVR 1600 but it also likes to drop out occasionally.

My problems seem to be power/HDMI related as when there is power change in the circuit say something else comes on the power drop seems to interrupt the HDMI handshaking. Line regulator seems to have helped mine but any static on the case seems to make it blink as well and a really good thunder storm will bother it.

I have to say after my experience with HK i think i will head back to Pioneer Elite or Onkyo for my next amp.

i cant say i've ever noticed it tied to something coming on, and certainly isn't only thunderstorm related.

unfortunate to hear others with similiar issues though
