  • Shipping to Sweetgrass dilemma

Hey guys, need some insight on this.

I recently purchased some bike parts from Jenson USA and got it shipped to At the Border Storage at Sweetgrass with the intent of someone is picking it up for me. A guy on Beyond was heading there and asked him whether he can pick up the box for me, he kindly said yes. But the shipping got delayed therefore he was unable to pick up the package for me.

Fast forward to few days ago, I emailed them (border storage) asking them if they can send it to me to my Calgary address and they said no. They said someone must pick it up physically. Is that true?

There is another guy on Beyond going to Sweetgrass in the 1st week of May but I dont really want to wait that long.

Is there any other options here?

Usually those places won't through ship as they then take liability for the package which they dont want to do. You're gonna need to go down there to get it

Yeah this is all on you, if you ship something to the border you have to go get it. Otherwise they hold it and send it back, if you paid for shipping you won't get any kind of shipping refund.

As they guy told you, the dont do parcel forwarding at US Border storage. They dont know what the package is and dont want to be liable if they try ship you something illegal into Canada (weapons, drugs etc), plus the paperwork for them to declare and ship the things to Canada would cost a fortune.

That is the risk that you take with that type of thing shipping to Montana.

Looks like a road trip is in your future.

I do 99% of the time, but sometimes sales on Jenson are hard to beat even after shipping.

Thanks for all your info and reply guys, got this sorted now. A friend is heading down there next week to pick up some parts, so he will pick it up for me.

I'm new to this shipping to the border process. So you basically just ship it to Sweetgrass and save on both shipping and duty costs?

Nope, you still need to pay duties.

If you've been under 24h in the USA when you declare it on your way back you are supposed to pay duties and taxes (but in all reality under $100 you won't get charged). However if you are over 24h you get $200, or over 48h $400 taxes and duties free. This is also per person, so you can double that (except that first $100 for under 24h) if you go with 2 people.

Note that they may want to see receipts for your purchases including Paypal emails printed out and any other receipts from retailers.

You are also allowed 1 tank of gas per day so might as well fill up!

So to make it worthwhile you basically have to spend a few days there?

Yeah, I usually will book a $50 motel (get some hotel points while I'm at it) and let the girlfriend go shopping, spend the night, then come back.

Even with the hotel and food I end up either breaking even (but I got a holiday out of it) or paying less (and getting a holiday out of it).

If you have a large order that you need to get from various suppliers, it will easily be worth your while. Alot of places do free shipping within the states

They won't ship it. Ipaid 20x's what something was worth because I needed something right away. Seller shipped to my first name, border company, sweet grass mt. I still can't believe it made it there, let alone to me. But I did pay dearly for it. I had to set up a brokerage account, etc, etc. if you have the time, drive down.
