  • Official F1 2013 Thread

I thought there might be a few of us wanting and willing to discuss the F1 season that began over the weekend.

Obviously things were a bit all over the place this first race as teams adjust to the new cars, tires, etc and weather was a factor in qualifying and such, but looks as things could be pretty interesting this year. I am hopeful I will be able to get to a race this year in the summer time, as I have never been and want to check it out before they switch to the smaller engines!

I felt so bad for Kimi post race poor bastard just wanted a drink meanwhile that little prick Vettle kept trying to give him the golden shower.

On a more serious note the racing has been a lot better over the last couple seasons but it is all fake and manufactured and it is really starting to bother me. It seems to be bothering the drivers now as well first the BS DRS and now with the shitty tires it doesn't matter how fast a car you have or how fast a driver you are.

If they want to limit them via tires just make it a super hard compound that they can't put all the power down with then they are all on an even playing field and the best drive should appear. None of this wondering when the tires are going to fall off 10sec/lap and hoping the chassis design is so easy on tires that they can make it 6 laps without a pitstop.

i agree with some of the above sentiments. also the pay driver thing sucks a bit and the apres-race commentary has got to go lol! all the BS aside though, i really just try to enjoy the racing for what it is. just a bunch of neat cars flying around the track. i don't really have a favorite team or driver. i just like it all. stoked if a team is doing good, and feel for a slumping team. i did feel for Alonso missing out by 3 points last season. i thought he was the one driver who really "earned" the chance.

i have only been to one F1 race and that was the 2010 Turkish GP in Istanbul. it was a fantastic, season changing race. i got to change a tire on a Mclaren car so definite highlight for me. i had great seats in the grandstand on the start/finish line, and got some great pics/video of the whole event. i'll post some up.

        Re: Official F1 2013 Thread

i dont know what you mean by the pay-driver thing so i cant really comment.

i thought race 1 was good. obviously weather is always a factor in racing, and it showed in Oz. Really good to see lotus and ferrari with pace right out of the gate to match red bull. the last few years its been red bull ahead by a mile right away and everyone else playing catch up. Both ferrari and the lotus were quick and kimi is a solid driver.
The tires are the tires are the tires. It bothers me but i'm over it. I'm not a fan of the set choices and the no refueling but it is what it is. I still think the racing was good and it was good to see actual passing going on. I'm all for DRS, F1 a few years ago sucked because the cars were designed so well to run in clean air that they were incapable of running one behind the other. DRS allows the back cars chances to pass and thats ultimately what makes for exciting racing.

Force India was certainly a surprise. They look liek they not only have the pace, but the driver that can get hte most out of the car. Hopefully they stay in the hunt. Will be interesting to see what happens to McLaren and Mercedes, whether they can find their way. The reliability on the Merc didn't look promising

i've read some mixed reviews about how some decent drivers last year got the axe for drivers that were bringing sponsors, and money to the table. basically buying your way into F1. if it's true, i feel for some of the drivers, and ultimately, the fans. if it's BS, then it makes for great conversation and hopefully those new drivers perform this year to prove it wrong. the force indias did look good. i'm also interested in how the midfield teams and the lower teams are doing, and the rivalry's between them.

i am with you about being "over it" with certain things. what can you do. i did hear that the new engine choice will not disappoint, as far as sound goes. either way, whatever changes they are making to better, or worsen F1, seem to be working as it's kept our interests going on with it haha!

              Re: Official F1 2013 Thread

DRS wouldn't be necessary if they cleaned up the aero issues.

Since they make the cars run so high and with a stepped floor they need the wings up top to create all the downforce on the cars. This of course dirties the air so bad the car behind can not develop any downforce themselves. This is all due to the fear of the lotus 79 coming back and sucker cars and sliding skirts etc etc.

If they lowered the cars let them run some flat bottom center with tunnels etc or at least more under car aero the could then mandate a simplier set of front and rear wings.

Straight Single element front wing with one flip section each side max 1/4 total width and a straight double element rear wing full width. This would allow the cars to run less wing up top and would disrupt the air much less as they develop it all under the car and it will allow the cars to run closer together. By being able to run the cars closer together the draft would be more effective due to the distance between cars being smaller and you would no longer need DRS.

This method would save the teams tons of money in wind tunnel time and aero budget as its much easier to make a flat bottom tunnel car work than the 900 wing and winglets on the cars these days.

Only draw back would be some people like the 900 wings and winglets like ricers like 10' wings on FWD civics.

              but thats just my 3cents

correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't the reason they went away from that was because they were able to create TOO much downforce that way and it was a)hard on tracks and b) allowed cars to go TOO fast in the corners. i thought the current aero design was attempting to balance speed with overall track and driver safety.

                  Re: Official F1 2013 Thread

They ended the skirt era for safety reasons as the skirts could get stuck / bounce up when hitting a curb and you would go from tons of DF to pretty much zero. But i don't think they should go back to a skirt style but more of a tunnel style build like CART had. If you limit the flat floor size and angle/area of the tunnels you can pretty much limit the DF to a reasonable level. Also tunnel cars aren't as effected by the curb hoping issues as there is no sealing of the low pressure area under the car like there was with skirts. The simpler wings would then be more to trim the balance on the car than to provide the bulk of the DF.

I watched it off and on previously but with no cable it was not always a top priority, but now I feel I am closer to the action and BBC coverage makes it easy too!!

Malaysia already this weekend often wet there, and a track I have seen in person too!!

                        Re: Official F1 2013 Thread

im glad its back, have been counting down the days all winter. Glad to see Lotus win with Kimi again, always been a fan of his since his days with Sauber in 2001.

i dont necessarily agree with the Pay Driver idea going around, but if the team needs to hire drivers that bring sponsorships to keep the team going, then i guess its alright, the more teams in F1, the happier i am. I am glad FIA introduced the 107% rule a couple years back tho, if the lower teams arent fast enough then i agree they shouldnt get to race.

I am predicting that it will be a 3 way manufactuers battle between Lotus, Ferrari and Redbull this year, with the drivers championship battle between Alonso, Vettel, Massa and Raikonnen taking it in Brazil.

their analysis and commentary is actually well thought out and insightful. before i had a PVR i used to just DL the BBC race torrents and watch those as they were far better.

I'll have to do that, as I'm at work so long that I never have time to catch the race... with the 2MBPS connection we get up here the downloads are a treat.
