I don't think this has anything to do with common sense or intelligence. Driver was excited about driving, probably has an ingrained action of locking the car (smart) and left his key on the seat because he was in an event where that is normal. Most people as some point in there life will make this mistake.
Who hasn't accidentally locked a set of keys in your car? Really be honest here. I know i for sure have, stuff happens, nothing to get excited about and definitely not something that has anything to do with common sense
i think it has alot to do with common sense....sure it happens accidentally sometimes too though.
Few months ago after our drift meet, tracy pat and i went to the car wash at 1 or 2 in the morning to spray the cars down, i turned off my car pulled the key out of the ignition, opened the door, pressed the lock button, tossed my keys on the seat shut the door and immediatly knew what i did...... completely lacking common sense and me being a dumbass. had to wait for ama to come at 3am. fun times right pat and tracy?

Haha okay that one wasn't very bright. You even knew what you are doing.
I'm surprised he hooked the keys, maybe he's done this before. Who hasn't locked their keys in there car I've learned the easiest way is to wedge the door and use a coat hanger to hit the unlock button.
My old mk4 jetta had the broken door lock switch back in the day and i was working in my friends garage, unlocked the car and opened the door, put the key on the dash, closed the door and a minute later the car auto locked itself.

That's like my gti, I don't know how I haven't locked the keys in it yet.
On another note, I've definitely locked my keys in my non euro car with it running, twice.

It's for this exact reason I've taken to always opening the drivers window so I can fit my arm through if I am leaving my keys in the car.
