Honestly a car forum is probably not the best place for someone like this. For someone with NO criteria and a strict budget you'd be better off just buying whatever consumer reports recommends or something. If he's looking for an appliance rather than a car he should be looking at fuel consumption, safety rating, resale, and yearly maintenance costs. Cars that will probably fit this criteria will be the accord, maxima, altima, camry, all horrendously boring (actually the maxima is nice but probably over 30).

"Car people" care about how a car sounds, how it takes a corner, how it looks inside and out, how it accelerates. Car people will overlook some or all of the above if they like the "Feel" of it.

Edit: I was typing this when you responded, sounds like may he has some criteria now.

volvo would be nice.. i would look for a used B7 a4 even.. i bet you can get one for about 30k since the b8 and b8.5 is out now

last gen passat would be OK too for sure.

I totally get where you're coming from. I was just hoping (and was happy that some did) that I'd get some suggestions that I hadn't thought of. I don't keep up with the domestics so my scope is pretty limited to Euro cars.

I mentioned this to him as well. We're going to the automall tomorrow to drive an S40 T5, and an '09 Passat. The lot we're going to has a few '09 A4s, though at 2 years older with 30,000 more km and $8k more, it may be hard for him to justify.

Decided on a black 2011 S40 T5. Couldn't get an Audi under warranty in his price range and wasn't a huge fan of the Passat. Thanks guys.
