  • Anyone here good with computers? Hacking XBOX HD's

I've had a first gen xbox for like 7 years or so, and the stock 20GB HD it came with is startign to get too small.
I'd like to upgrade so I can load games onto it and all that, but MS wants $180 for their "special" hard drive that plugs into xbox.

You can obviously get a lot more storage for a lot less using a standard PC HD, they just need to be slightly hacked.

Found a good DIY, just wondering if someone is a little more proficient than I am with them and can give me a hand doing this: http://digiex.net/guides-reviews/con...-360-slim.html

I don't have any experience doing this, and can't help ya, although the tutorial does look pretty simple at a glance.

BUT based on my hacking on other projects, I would say you might want to find a more recent post or tutorial, say something written within the last 6 months, because you never know if these things are going to go "as planned" when the post is so old. It looks like maybe it was originally posted in 2009 and updated in 2011 but that's a while ago.

I didn't read the whole thread but the last 5 posts aren't "worked for me A++ would do again" so that is often a sign that it's possibly outdated or that maybe you could run into challenges like other people have. In fact the last couple posters couldn't get it to work?

      good call.

I know there's a bunch of gamers on here, what are you guys doing to expand your HD's?
Seems ridiculous that MS wants almost $180 for a HD that you can buy for essentially less than $50

I've never tried anything like that before, but I'd like to expand my Xbox HD. I have a first gen 360, so I try to install all of my games to the HD to avoid the red ring, but I only have room for 2 or 3 games. If anyone can figure this out, I'd like to know the secret!

Apparently you can just get a knockoff or pre-hacked drive on ebay for much less... & no risk...? Under $50

I bought a cable to transfer from my 20 gig to 250gig and it didn't work I ended up wrecking my 250 and I'm stuck with the 20 still. I'm not sure how I messed up either so I'm hesitate to try again with another hard drive. It's only 11 months till a new Xbox haha.

Hate to tell you but installing the games to the HDD isn't going to save you from a ROD. It is usually the graphics processor that fails due to a bad solder joint. Sometimes even the main processor fails and it might even heat up the unit more by accessing the HDD more.

Hmmm... I read somewhere that installing to the HDD would help prevent the ROD. I occasionally run games from the disc instead and it does feel warmer after I do that instead of playing from the HDD. I dunno, you do have a point though about accessing the HDD more.

You should be careful, installing a new HDD even with these hacks can cause issues due to the MS security key stuff.

I still have a HDD for 1st gen xbox 360, not sure what size anymore. I'll check.

ya i've heard of the "possibility" of console ban from XBL if you are caught with a "hacked" drive, but you would think if it was a huge deal you would read more about people actually getting caught. i havent seen anything in the few hours i spent looking on this last night.

Is the Xbox hd just a computer one like on ps3? If so couldn't you just clone the old drive on to the new one? I'm clueless about Xbox's though.

Re: Anyone here good with computers? Hacking XBOX HD's

Ok I'm confused. You have an ORIGINAL Xbox? or an ORIGINAL Xbox 360? The original Xbox only had an 8 gig hard drive so I'm guessing 360.

I read something about 1.5 years ago about being able to crack open the case and install a bigger drive it just has to be formatted. It's just a laptop drive.

should have got a 250gb 360 slim on boxing week for 199.

And Microsoft has banned thousands of xbox's due to modified HDD. I considered doing the drive mod years ago as apparently it was nearly impossible to detect but didn't want to risk getting booted off live. I'd have to see if I can find it.

I have a brand new original 360 hdd kicking around here some place. I should put it in a museum or something.

From the first post linking to a 360 website, I'm going to assume it's an xbox 360

It is just a laptop drive, however MS has added an encryption system to the boot sector and it identifies each HDD to each Xbox. I've got a feeling that this hack might not work since it doesn't copy that information?

I never click on a link from Rondal as I assume it's full of viruses

I tried to find it, it was on xbox-scene.com/org but when you go to tutorials the link dead. A friend forwarded me this though....

Like I said though, never tried it, didn't want to get booted off live plus I got RROD shortly after the slims came out so I bought a 250gb.
