  • winter tires, studs and chains

I was trying to find out tire laws for driving through kootenay national park because the sign there says cars need winter tires or must carry chains. I guess I never paid attention to it. So many people drive through with neither. Turns out it is required and you can be fined for not complying. I'm curious if insurance would pin this on the many that go off that road every year.

Anyway, found this info along with dates that you're allowed to run studs here. Decent brochure.

ICBC probably could, but vehicles from outside the jurisdiction would be hard to prosecute from an insurance standpoint. I remember a few times on the coast when there were road blocks and an officer checking tires before you were allowed to carry on.
