    Re: Home Theatre question

Pioneer is a good brand. I have a Pioneer receiver is from the 70's (complete with massive transformers that weigh probably >100lbs) and it produces better clarity than my H/K setup.

I have an old Yamaha RXV1600. I'd buy Yamaha again based on my experience. For speakers, to save space, I got rid of my towers and bought a 6 speaker Polk Blackstone set and have been pretty happy with them for clarity and sound.

I have had a couple Denon's, Marantz and a Sony. My favorites are Denon by far.

You were joking about the Bose right? So many problems with Bose... just do a little online research if you think I'm being a hater. I don't need to get into all the details. Bose is all marketing, gimmicks. Not quality.

Lots of great components mentioned already... Marantz, Denon, Yamaha... and you honestly can't go wrong with some of the better components from Onkyo, Pioneer Elite or even HK or Sony... I'd say just avoid the bottom of the line stuff that a few of those brands offer.

I recommend reading on avsforum.com or just go to a quality shop in town like Sounds of Music, The Audio Room, General Audio, Loyalty Sound, K&W... their bottom of the line receivers will blow away the best models at future shop or best buy.

Edit; If you want a great deal too you can often do well buying something previously loved on Audiogon.

General is great, I have bought stuff there too. But any of the shops I mentioned above are great too... above all do your research, but anything from a real audio shop is going to make you way happier.

If you absolutely want to go to a chain store, I think the best deals are Soundsaround, just because they sometimes carry some premium products and will make a deal on the price if you care to bargain. But then again they will also rip you off if they can... the sticker prices are often a little marked up and although they sell some good products they also carry some crap.

Audio is like anything, snobery is popular but at the end of the day one should buy what performs best to the individuals standard.

The only quality stuff Bose makes is their noise cancelling headphones, the rest of their stuff is crap, and expensive crap at that. You're still hard pressed to find better noise cancelling headphones than the QC15's....

Hugely pushy sales people there, I always felt like they'd throw in their shoes if you bought an overpriced stereo from them. Had no idea they were not around anymore.

I've got some yamaha receiver, it's not top end or anything, but it get's the job done and I'm liking it a lot more than the old sony one I had.

The only reason they made profits were those Big 4 'sales'.
