  • Home Theatre question

    Hi there,

We are looking to replace the reciever (dinosaur) in our home theatre setup.

I'm looking for some tips and good places to go to get a decent quality one. Something that will last for awhile, that I won't have to upgrade in a couple of years (wishfull thinking?)

    Any tips are appreciated.

    Thanks

If money isn't an issue, I watched the Avengers on a Bose home theatre system the other day and I think it might have changed the way I look at life.

If you only want a receiver, I'm not too sure what to recommend. If you want to do a whole new system, I'd defintely agree with the Bose ones. My aunt and uncle have one and it's amazing! The only system I've heard that was better than the Bose was a Bang and Olufsen system, however you could buy a new Jetta for less than that system!

Go to Cochrane and check out "Home Treasures". They sell used stuff and randomly get some awesome audio equipment. I picked up a good set of pioneer speakers and a superb RCA 2360 receiver for $50. I've seen them get Onkyo and Bose stuff sometimes.

I too am looking. I have a 10 year old Yamaha that I still like but it does not have any HDMI ports. Would like to stick with Yamaha. Which models do you guys recommend?

Our H/K was a pain to setup and get the levels working but once it did, it's awesome!

H/K receiver + JBL speakers (combo new and vintage series) = Heaven!

Mine is an older RX-VR2700 matched to JBL speakers and Polk subs. Very happy with this setup and can't see myself upgrading any time soon.

                          Re: Home Theatre question

I might get new speakers as well. When I bought my system years ago, I spent some good cash on the speakers and sub (Mission) with the mind set that speaker technology would not change as fast as reciever technology would.
I figured I would spend a little more on the reciever a little later on in life when my career was a little more established. Maybe someone could enlighten me.

                            New ≠ better

My vintage JBL speakers from the 70's are totally better than the new incarnations. I just rebuilt the foam cup and she is better now!

                              Yamaha
                              Denon
                              Pioneer
                              Marantz
                              Harmon Kardon
Can't go wrong with any of those brands

I have a Harmon Kardon, and Pioneer. Next one will probably be a Marantz.

I stay away from Bose and their "better sound through marketing" whenever possible.
