  • Has anyone done the brokerage papers on their own?

The seller sent my package via UPS and I was wondering how difficult it would be for me to file the brokerage papers in order to avoid the insane brokerage bill that I would be stuck with.

    Anyone have any experience?

How do I go about doing this? Do I call UPS to tell them that I want to do it on my own? Or do they call me? The package has already been sent.

Full DIY here (its old, but I don't think the process would change any):

edit: Just noticed that it's already been sent, call UPS with your tracking number and tell them you want to self clear

Then you'll print off the pdf they send you and take that to Customs (big blue building near the airport). Pay duty there and pick up your merchandise at the UPS warehouse.

If you need any help or directions to the Customs building don't hesitate to ask, I've done it a few times.

When I called the 1-800 number for UPS today they told me that I can only do the paper work myself if I live at the point of entry, which is Winnepeg. They basically told me I'm SOL because I live in Edmonton.

No, that's jerking you around and illegal. You aren't obligated to go thru a broker.

Phone them back, tell them you'll be self-clearing the parcel in Edmonton. Where you live. And where the package was to be delivered.

          That's my two cents, anyways.

I called again and they told me that my package is too expensive and I am not able to clear them myslef. When I asked how much the brokerage fees would cost, she told me $65. I thought I would be paying 10x that amount.

UPS sent me to collections for $19 for a free electronics sample that was sent to me once... The value of the item wasn't even that much.

I have a business account with them and even when you pay the seller to ship it to you they charge your account to receive packages. From Canada and yes a 12-19 collections fee is brutal. It really sucks.
