  • Bought some wheels....how much should I claim them for on the custom's forms?

I've never bought wheels on-line before and the seller asked me how much I would like to claim the wheels for on the custom's forms.

I'm guessing that the tax I will be charged is based on the amount claimed?

Is it dangerous to claim the wheels at a low price?

Do I still pay tax if the wheels were made in the US? They also come with Falken tires mounted if that makes a difference.

Wheels are being shipped via USPS to avoid crazy brokerage fees

If I claim them as a gift I don't get taxed?

What if they get damaged during shipping? Would I be S.O.L?

I would just claim them for what you paid. Be honest about it, yeah you can try to cheat the system by claiming them for a lower price but if they get damaged there might be questions about their actual value. Some companies that ship from the US use cheaper prices, but most have switched away from that

I wouldn't take any chances either. Just claim them for what you paid. Most times when they charge tax they do look at the reciept and where they were from. (at least from my experience) The couple bucks you "might" save isn't worth the headaches if they catch it.
Also, I'm pretty sure if its a gift with a value marked you still get charged tax. ( Again, just from my experience with shipping)

Gifts are still taxed. The gift vs purchase box on the customs form only comes into play for small $ amounts.

Since you're doing USPS/Canadapost, you'll just be charged a $5 fee and GST ($8 and GST if it's an express post shipment). It's not like UPS or Fedex that will add a $100+ dollars in brokerage and bond fees.

Usually you can only insure the value for the declared amount, so if you put $500 but you paid $1500 and the wheels are lost, you're out the $1k.

As others have mentioned, just be up front and pay based on the value of what you paid on the receipt. When I imported my KWs I goofed and said they're from Germany, so paid a bit more on duty vs. the US parts from 034/JHM. It was $20-$30 so it really was negligible.

You may have an issue if the tires are used, mine got help up for a while a few years back because of this.
