  • Connecting Macbook-Apple TV-DVD player to speakers.

having some trouble getting some speakers hooked up in my room.

so i have up a sony home theatre system, an apple tv, and my macbook. but i do not have a tv in my room. The overall goal is to have my macbook wirelessly stream music/movies/sound to my apple tv, which is hooked up via HDMI to my Sony Blu-ray/DVD Home Theatere system and use my macbook as the "TV" as i do not have one in my room. My Speakers are hooked up to the Sony Blu-ray/DVD Home Theatere system. Is there any way i can make this work?

the guy at future shop told me this is all the stuff i would need, and to hook it up like this:
Apple TV(via HDMI) to DVD home theatre system wired to speakers. Then airplay my music/videos from my mac to the apple tv.

im guessing the problem is that both HDMI ports are both outputs, but i could be wrong.
Any ideas on how to make this work?

If your HDMI port on your sony is an input then it will not work.......

If you don't have a TV in your room the appleTV is useless. What you want is an airport express which would stream all your sound from your macbook to your Sony........

    Explanation of how it works....

PS. I also use mine when we go to a hotel that has free CAT5 internet but pay for wireless....... plug in the CAT5 to the express and BOOM.....Wireless for free!

Hmm interesting. my sony home theatre player does have a usb port. if i hooked up a usb from my H.T.S to the airport express, would it be able to stream from the macbook?

no the usb is for network printing and network drives. the audio streaming would come from the 3.5mm jack.

        with one of theses

Thanks again popp, your suggestion worked! the only problem i have now, is that only 3 out of the 6 speakers are playing sound when i use the air play . all the speakers work when i put the home theatre in "test mode" but then three don't work when i use airplay.

Apple doesn't make the first gen anymore, only the second. The second has a wan in (use as router) and a lan out (ethernet to non wifi product) . The second gen looks just like an apple tv but white. same retail as the original was. Look on kijiji for a 1st gen.
