    Re: US-Canada rant

You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Move to the states if you think it is better. I don't like the prices in Canada but I like the pay, and I like the fact that we have a much lower population.

Totally straying from topic now, but In Switzerland I noticed most of the pumps offered 95 and 98 octane, but was unclear if it was actually higher octane, or just a different calculation. If it was actually 98, then the price was pretty similar to here, but it seems like octane may not equate to the same thing everywhere?

If I remember correctly we use the AKI method of rating and I'm guessing Switzerland uses the RON method:

            AKI 87 = RON 91
            AKI 91 = RON 95
            AKI 94 = RON 101.5

            I might be wrong though.

And here I thought this thread was going to be about US/CAN car pricing. Bummer.
With the CADUSD already at $1.03 (or at least close)... all I can think about is importing another US car.

PS. Back on topic... who drinks that Miller sh*t anyways!

i love that beer and all the micro brews i can get.. the had a ton of fall harvest pumpkins ones out!! yummmm

yea the RON gas.. it was like that on australia. i saw 98 octane and was like WTF!!

i never said i wanted to move down to the US i just get annoyed with how much SIN tax we pay on liquor and i'm not even a big drinker.. its the principal behind it..

and oddly cheese.. a giant block of delicious tillamook cheese is like 8 dollars that block at coop or sobeys would be like 18!

anyways my rant is price differences when there really shouldn't be..

Dairy products are more expensive in Canada as the dairy board lobbies for market protection and the resultant higher pricing. That said Canadian dairy has far less steroids and other unhealthy issues.

Ryan specifically mentioned Tillamook though which is way better than regular cheese down there! The dairy they use does not have hormones or anything. We always buy a bunch of tillamook cheese. Make sure you get the jalapeno Jack! I hate the milk in the states though it tastes gross even the better brands.

I couldn't believe the prices either but what I make here vs anywhere in Montana/Idaho/Washington more than makes up for it. It makes for cheap vacations also.

That tillamook cheese is so effin good. But I do agree, I know it costs a lot to run a country, but I believe inflation has gotten so bad that they need more and more constantly, but our wages don't go up at the same rate. There has to be a breaking point one day. Taxing the ish out of us isn't the way to go about it IMO. I don't mind paying some taxes for our kick backs, but something's gotta give.

It's also important to remember that everything is relative. Our minimum wage is considerably higher ~$4 higher IIRC. Canada's economy is envied right now by the United States, I'd gladly pay $50 for a case of beer if it meant I remain Canadian.

i wanted to stop in tillamook on the way back from wuste a few years back and DJ and graeme thought i was nuts!

US gas is cheaper because its one of the lowest taxed commodities when compared with other nations without nationalized oil companies. Combine that with the fact they have refineries and transport costs are low its a no brainer. Taxes here kill us.

it does pay to have US offices and consultants that go back and forth. i recently picked up a micro backpacking stove for $11 on Amazon.us its friggin not available on amazon.ca and $98 at MEC. F off
