I've been wanting a Sony NEX for a while, from my tests it takes superb pictures, has a large CCD but is half the size of a DSLR.

get a nikon d90, the things are dirt cheap used now and are great start cameras that you can seriously grow into. the d7000 is really the replacement for it, but its a lot of $$$ to dump for a first camera. the D90 has most of the same stuff for a fraction of the price.

camera bodies are the cheap part, its the glass the gets expensive, as it doesn't depreciate or get replaced nearly as quickly
