  • Best tires for Vancouver?

    Hi all,

Just wondering what your thoughts are for the best tires for Vancouver's weather? I'm heading back to UBC again for school and trying to decide what will work best. Do you think winters and all seasons are needed? I will be doing some trips up to Whistler in the winter and was wondering if something like Extreme Contact DWS would be enough, or would it be better to run a separate winter setup?

    Thanks!

The DWS would be a good tire for Vancouver, i would say winters are not necessary.

You can get away with not using winters, but in my 5 yrs there I was always glad I had them. You don't need them so much in town, but when you do go to Whistler or anywhere outside of the valley you will need them.

I like the superior grip that winter tires give you in the snow, and it may just be psychological, but i feel that the car is more stable at decent speeds with the blowing snow than with all season tires. You can probably find a set of used winter tires on kijiji for cheap, if you can i would go that way

I know Nokian offers an all-weather tire (not all-season) the WRG2. Not as good as an exclusive winter tire but much better than a simple all-season if you're hitting the snow.

Toyo and Canadian tire sell a snowflake all season. I will be trying out. Nokian are $$ and wear fast. New is valuable cause of warrantee. Don't buy used, 50% worn winter's are summer's. There is no extra siping at that point. I would say try a set of the summeriest tires from the winter bunch and drive, unless you rip it in the summer at AutoX, etc. June, July, august trade off for dec Jan Feb. Take your pick of where you want the most traction at the speed limit. For me, it's winter hands down. I race, so speed limits with pass cars and tires is a joke. No offense to anyone, but a sloppy winter tire in the summer is not dangerous. I was at race city doing 180 with winter's. Dumb, they wear out mega fast, but not as dangerous as frozen tires on ice.

consumer reports did a test a couple years ago and the Nokian WRG2 performed better than 3/4's of the dedicated winter tires in the test, even better than the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70.
i personally would run the Nokian if i lived in vancouver, my parents run them and they live in Kamloops, havent ever had an issue with them, sure they may wear out a little quicker than a regular all season but they do come with a tread life gaurantee if bought new from Kal Tire.
