Re: Blair's Official Everything London Thread

Well I am not sure how many people follow this thread and I guess I have not been keeping it up too much at the moment but I thought I would put a bit of a summary together as I have reached my 6 month anniversary of living here today. Overall I enjoy it a lot and do feel well settled in here, not really missing Calgary much at all, maybe the odd restaurant and of course friends and family, but London is quickly feeling like home.

The weather here is pretty mild, I have only had to wear my winter coat from Canada once so far and that was probably overkill. There is a fair bit of rain of course (2012 was the wettest on record for the country) but the lawn is still green and it has been below zero only on a few occasions. Things are supposed to cool off a bit next week and January is typically the coldest month so we will see what is in store over the next little bit, but hard to complain.

Sarah and I often feel that we have not done or seen a lot of London so far as we get set in normal life and with her she is especially busy with work most of the time. That being said we have explored a few areas and been to a few of the museums and galleries but as anyone who has been here will tell you there really is so much to do in this city, and if we have to move back to Calgary at some point that will be a major issue I think. We have been to an Olympic event, England International football match at Wembley, the NFL game at Wembley, (already have tickets to both games for 2013 as well) and Sarah went to a Chelsea Champions league match one night too. We are hoping to take in some theatre soon, James McAvoy in Macbeth is tempting and I am going to a concert at Royal Albert Hall in March which will be exciting.

Not knowing a lot of people is a bit challenging but we are doing ok and I have met a few people through other forums which is nice, especially since I am at home every day as I write my dissertation. Our neighbours are very nice though and have helped us feel welcome to the street and even after six months we already received Christmas cards from them which never happened after six years in Calgary.

Travel is of course a benefit of being here and I guess having been to Cardiff, Copenhagen, Paris, Milan and Essen is not bad after six months either. We are off to Paris Disneyland (well complete my travel to every Disney park in the world) in 10 days and after that the trips might be a bit scarce for a little while but we are thinking of an adventure to Moscow in the early summer, depending on work and school schedules.

London still is an exhausting city and some things do take a toll on you when you have to walk and take transit with millions of people anywhere you go and also share places with so many tourists but I am thankful to have the opportunity to live in such an amazing place. I would prefer to live a bit more central but with the location of my wife`s office and the rising costs associated with location I still think we have a good balance with where we do live. Speaking of costs I do think most things are still pretty reasonable here and some things are shocking compared to Canada, such as a full service bank account that has no monthly service charges, the cost of food, the cost of cell phones and being able to get a pint for less than the price of a Coke.

Anyway those are some ramblings about my time so far here, thanks for reading and if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask!

Re: Blair's Official Everything London Thread

Well not much new to report over here in London we did get a bit of snow over the winter, the worst was maybe 10cms over a couple days and it causes total chaos, a bit laughable really as that much snow and -5C temps is snow day material for schools and work. They just try to encourage everyone to stay home so transit and transport delays are not too horrible, but spring is close now as trees are budding and daffodils are popping up everywhere.

We have not really traveled this year so far, with a quick trip to Paris Disneyland in late January which was a little cold and pretty quiet, strange to go on a ride outside in wet snow for sure. Other than that I have just been living the life of a Londoner and working away on my dissertation as the deadline is approaching too quickly. I have had some friends and relatives visiting so I have been doing a bit of tour guiding and seeing many museums and other sites. Sarah and I are going to the theatre for the first time tomorrow (I am not a fan of musicals at all) but we will be seeing Helen Mirren playing the Queen in her performance of The Audience, should be interesting.

Just a brief update and I will leave you with a pic I snapped last week on the London Eye, while up there we went through a brief blizzard and this was the clearing as the sun was going down, fairly cool I think!

wow so romantic! LOL that's awesome and a very nice picture. I always get a kick about places that go crazy over snow like you say and causes havoc.

When I went down to Florida in December, there winter temperatures are our summer temps. I was wearing shorts and t shirts while everyone was wearing sweaters, light scarves and jeans. Everyone was looking at me like I was crazy. Especially telling them how great the weather was lol. I'm going to China (Shanghai, Beijing) in June and was thinking of starting a thread with pics and whatever I encounter over there. It's going to be killer hot which i'm not looking forward to at all.

i'm really digging that pic though. it's so nice!

Thanks the pic was just taken with my cellphone as I was experimenting with the HDR function, just the right timing I think. Please post up a thread about your journey to China, I would love to see and will hopefully get there one day (I have been to HK once) and you don't happen to know if you will pass by any Be@rbrick shops do you?

I have been to Wolfsburg twice now, always fun to spend some time there. I did not personally drive on the autobahn but I was a passenger for 500+ speedy kms on it!

Re: Blair's Official Everything London Thread

Well not a lot new to report here, I am closing in on being here for 10 months now, so pretty adjusted I think and just in the process of renewing our lease so stable for another year. There is a real season called spring here, you actually get flowers blooming in April and now in May the lawns are growing normally as I have cut mine a couple times already and needing another one soon. The weather has been pretty stable with temps mostly in the teens for the last few weeks, with the odd rainy day, but nothing too horrendous.

I have not been into central London as much as I would like lately but seems every time we go in it becomes a £300+ day with shopping and food, so you can only afford so many of those in a month before it becomes an issue! I have seen a couple plays which is nice and been to a concert at Royal Albert Hall which puts most places to shame. Soho is still my favorite area with plenty of interesting shops, restaurants and people, sometimes though I wish there was a few less tourists around but I guess that is what happens when you live in a place like this.

I am in the final weeks of my dissertation now (due June 28, 2013) so pretty much working on that a fair bit of my time and I even applied for a couple jobs this week, but I am luckily in no rush to find anything so I will enjoy the summer unless a great opportunity comes my way. I have not left the area since January but my wife and I are going to Iceland in early July for some whale watching and sightseeing with 21 hours of daylight.
One thing you will all find a bit sad is that I have only been in a car once all year so far, and it was for 45 minutes in a Ford Ka so not at all spectacular. I take transit to the center of London but for the local activities I pretty much just walk everywhere, things like groceries are limited to what you can carry, but there is always delivery if you need it!

I do like it a fair bit here, obviously not working I am a bit biased in my views but I do not think about Calgary too much. My wife has just gone back to Calgary for a business trip for the first time this week so I am interested to hear what she thinks as I feel we are getting pretty adjusted, especially on scale as I am starting to think things like Golf’s look fairly big

Anyway just a few random thoughts yet again on living in Greater London!

The Globe here in London? I have been past it several times but have never seen anything there. On my first ever trip to England (back in 1998) I went to Stratford-upon-Avon which is where Shakespeare was born, you can still visit the house, and I saw The Merchant of Venice at the Royal Shakespeare Company theatre there as well.
