  • Seized coilover collars....any recommendations on how to remove?

    As the title states, I have some seized coilover collars and I would like to free them up.

    The coils are currently off the car. Any suggestions?

    Lots of penetrating oil and time. Hammer and a flathead to break them free maybe too.

    Had to cut them off Matts mk2 a while ago because they were siezed so bad. Lets hope thats not the case for you

      Good vice and 36" pipe wrench and penatrating oil. Make sure to wire brush threads before trying to loosen collar so no extra junk is pushed in the threads

        PB Blaster, spray every hour and tap with a hammer. One good spray and sit overnight. Try in the morning.

          I searched a little more and I read that some people recommended leaving the coils in coca-cola

          I also read on-line that applying heat is a no no.

            Heat won't work it ruins the shock internals.

              Mine were so badly seized that i just bought new coilovers but it worked out since my seized ones were sort of at the end of their life. I tried everything to unseize them.

                stuck mine in a chain vice and a rag to not ruin threads on shock, used a pipe wrench and lubricant and slowly twisted all of them off, the threads on the collers were all messed up so hammering wouldnt work and would of been a big waste of time, i can do yours for you if you want got it down to a science since ive done it so much haha

                let me know

                  If it comes down to it and you don't want to trash your current coils, cut a slot in the perch at a 45 degree angle. Don't go all the way through the perch though. Once you have almost finished cutting through the perch take a flat head screwdriver and stick it in the slot and twist it. the twisting motion will break the perch free. Doing it this way allows you to reuse the perch if you need to, just make sure you cut the angle the right way so when you tighten the perch it wedges against it self and stays tight.
