  • Thoughts on repairing hail damage.

So here's the deal, the gf's 04 Mazda 3 got hammered in that hail storm last week and the adjuster gave us a quote of $4100 to repair minus the $250 deductible. Now what I'm thinking as we have been tossing around the idea about selling the car anyways would we be better off taking the money and not fixing it and sell the car for $3000-$4000, as from what I can tell people are asking anywhere from $3500 to $9000 on Kijiji. The people who are selling on the higher end aren't going to get that for a run of the mill commuter car. But at $4000 someone would be getting a great car with only 145,000kms

    What do you guys think?

Pics of damage? All depends on whether you can sell it for $4100 more with the damage fixed. My guess is no.

I'm wondering who is going to buy a hail damaged car for $3000-$4000?. What selling price would you be asking if it were not damaged?

Why don't you just pay the $250 and get the car fixed then sell it for more? it's a comprehensive claim and wont make the insurance go up if that is what you are worried about.

The way I'm looking at it is even fixed, I'd at best get $6000, which I think is high hopes. So if I keep the $4000 and sell for $3000 I'd be $1000 ahead. Now am correct me if I'm wrong can't I just claim the money which the adjuster is quoting? Or do I have to get it fixed? (Never had to make a claim before) The damage isn't that bad (I'll post some pics later) and really, someone who's looking for a $3000 car isn't or shouldn't be that concerned about a dimpled car.

I think anyone selling a hail damaged car, can expect the value of the car minus the value of repairs as the selling price. That's just my opinion of course.

Sold my MK3 1.8CL (bottom of the barrel pile of crap) for $4700 and it got pummeled with hail TWICE!!! Moral of the story, if the car runs strong and you're selling it to a non enthusiast (just needs a good running car), they wont give 2 sh!ts about hail damage or cosmetics.

Edit: it was a 97 cl, 118xxx on the clock, sold in late 2010

The only issue about taking the buy out is you will never never have a body panel covered under insurance again if you get in an accident. Basically when you take a payout on a body part you have to prove you had it repaired to be covered again. If you sell it the insurance companies will know as there is a history of a pay out.
