If you haven't done this before, be sure you fully understand what you are getting into before you start. I've done it and although I would do it again, it's a lot of steps and there is risk along the way as well.

I know two people who have imported cars (an Infiniti G35 and a BMW M5) that both were extremely unhappy at the end of it all, plus they paid more money than they would have paid buying a car here.

Be very aware that you may have trouble getting warranties honoured here on US cars. You will also possibly get gouged on unnecessary parts/labor by your local dealership in order to have it approved by them here in Canada depending on the make of the car (VW is probably not so bad).

I recommend using cars.com to find cars, it's actually pretty good. Ebay motors is also not bad. And as you said, the Vortex.

You should also consider shopping for a BC car instead of a US car. My buddy bought a Mercedes in Vancouver a couple years ago and probably saved 5-10K plus got a mint looking car... I am 100% sure that it was a deal he never would have found in Calgary. The cars there are often in better shape and the higher population means more cars to choose from (and lower prices) on the used market. Lastly the cost of importing a car from BC is way less, and no need to involve any dealerships or authorities. Also some makes of car just seem to be more popular in Vancouver, call it demographics or whatever you want.

I agree with Kor, importing US Car is not what it was 5 years ago. From what I figured out, the price has to be about 75% to break even, based on a car that is $25K+, if it's a $10K car, might as well go west.
You also take a hit on the resale because it's an american car. I had a BC car, 110km's, original windshield and no rick chips.
