  • Edmonton or Calgary ?

ive lived in calgary most my life untill i moved to edmonton in 2008. i then moved back to calgary in 2010 but once again i had to move back to edmonton this spring. i just wanted to see what you all think, which city is better Calgary or Edmonton?

i HATE living in Edmonton, i dont have a choice i have to be here but i hate it... compared to Calgary, Edmonton just looks dirty! the roads in Edmonton are junk... they never fix them, roads here are so confusing its unreal... ill be driving down one road then it becomes another road. Edmonton drivers cant drive for ****. when driving in Calgary the city loks birght and chearfull ( minus driving in ... oh lets say forest lawn) and driving in edmonton is more like just driving in crackton. i dont like the oilers or the flames so i wont comment on that.

Make your pick CGY or EDM and why.

Niether they both have the +- but you have to choose one right. If I did not need to be in Alberta for a decent paycheck I would go someplace like Vernon or the Island

I'd say calgary is the worst for that, not edmonton! off the top of my head 22x becomes marquis of lorne and spruce meadows trail. 162 ave becomes sunvalley blvd. shawnessy blvd becomes midlake blvd.

It should be numbered like edmonton is.

I think you're biased, just like me since I spent most time back in Ontario. I'm not a big fan of Edmonton either, but I make the most of it. Saying you "have" to be in Edmonton? You don't "have" to be anywhere. Don't like something...change it...unless you have a parole officer who says otherwise. LoL. The response may be harsh, but it's true. Hope you see a silver lining somewhere.

I've been mugged twice in Edmonton in the two weekends I've spent there, wouldn't want to live there.

As for the roads, they're just bad everywhere in Alberta

Well as a born and raised Calgarian and having just been in Edmonton on Monday I would still probably pick Calgary of the two, the roads are still not great here but still better than in Edmonton, IMO. The city is getting nicer and there are a few things I like about it but not sure if I could live there but hell I like my cities large and very busy so hence why I am not picking either. I find both Calgary and Edmonton look so bleak sometimes, especially this time of year before things green up but man I was up on Stoney Trail for the first time ever a couple weeks ago around Panorama Hills and the houses road, ground are all just shades of grey and brown, seem to have forgot to put some trees in the burbs, just not appealing to me at all.

                Re: Edmonton or Calgary ?

I lived in Calgary for three and a half years and been to Edmonton a few times.
I liked Edmonton as some parts of it reminded me of London, but that probably because I was getting home sick. I had to admit I found the roads were every poor (like London). Road network can be confusing (like London). Some buildings can be really ghetto (like London).

I like Calgary as it seems progressive (unlike London). Rush hour traffic is not really what I would call traffic(unlike London). Road network is dead simple(unlike London). Buildings are new (unlike London).

I'd say Calgary, but i would not have too much of a problem with Edmonton. Its what you make of it I guess..

Im biased, but Calgary is better.

                  Because mountains
                  Because murder rate
                  Because racecar

                    Re: Edmonton or Calgary ?

I grew up in Calgary, left shortly after high school I could get around for the most part there. I go back now and it is confusing. Edmonton for the most part is set up on a grid of numbers, and easy to navigate with half as many quadrants as Calgary, unless you venture into new subdivisions with named streets, or god forbid Millwoods which is a nightmare I will admit.

I'd live in Victoria on Vancouver island if I didn't need the money. My whole family is there. But to live there I'd need to make more than I make here...

                          Re: Edmonton or Calgary ?

                          Getting Around
You must be drunk if you think Calgary is easier to navigate. The setup in Edmonton is waaayyyy easier to understand.

                          Roads
I would agree that Calgary has generally better roads than Edmonton.

                          Traffic
The deerfoot is a nightmare. It seems like everyone on that road is either a wannabe racecar driver or a terrified driver (both being extremely dangerous). I would also say that the traffic congestion in Calgary is worse than Edmonton.

                          Appearance
Calgary is the better looking city. The downtown core is more modern and eye appealing. The Bow river is very nice and usable unlike the North Saskatchewan. The new arena that is being built in Edmonton has the potential to really make the downtown core a much more appealing place than it is now.

                          Airport
The Edmonton International is a better looking facility with all of the recent renovations and additions. That being said, it is out of town and not as convenient as the Calgary airport which is located in town. The Calgary airport also offers more flight options compared to Edmonton.

                          Location
Calgary wins hands down. It is located near some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

                          Crime
Edmonton had a nasty year last year when it came to murders, but those numbers have since come down to a more "normal" amount. I've lived in Edmonton my entire life and I have never been mugged. Statistically speaking, Calgary is considered a safer place.

                          People
This is a tough one. What turns me off about Calgary is the arrogance that many people seem to display. In my opinion more people in Calgary compared to Edmonton think their **** doesn't stink.

                            Re: Edmonton or Calgary ?

I do like living in Calgary far more than I did in Edmonton.

Roads are way way worse in Edmonton, crime rate is higher, but I know that Calgary has some bad spots too, as all places do. I'm definitely moving back to Sylvan when I'm done school though as I do not like living in the city all that much.
