We do laser scanning. I don't think anyone really wants to model the results...

Don't as-builts just get lost in Doc control never to be seen again?

We usually do them for old plant sites that are getting upgrades and additions. Gives a 3d base to start the new design from.

as-builts are only as good as the site communication, the are always so many changes in layout and specs. Most firms are far to lazy to go back and capture all these small changes on the as-builts leaving plans that are not accurate. And I have worked with many engineers who have a degree but no frigging idea how things work in the real world causing lots of on site on the fly changes.

That, I think is why they have been asking for the scans now. They are a pain in the sense that you have tens of millions of surveyed points and the data files are 4 + GB, but if you had the time, you can model it all to within a few mm after, with every bolt and rivet if you really want to go nuts. It can be an overwhelming amount of data though.

I scanned my mk4 jetta a few years back. Was pretty cool.
