Wrong wrong and wrong. You will noticed the difference from a cheap socket and a good one buy how many bolts you strip. The materials and tolerances from decent sockets fit tighter and have less flex so they mate to the flat surfaces for a bolt much better and lessen the likelihood of stripping a lot. This comes about even more so with rusty and dirty bolt heads.

Re: Good deal on socket sets at Canadian Tire

If you use the socket once a year on bolts with no corrosion you will not notice the difference. So if you buy new cars every half year, or live in a salt free place you shouldn't have a problem.

Now I am not saying Mastercraft is top end sockets, but they are better then the junk at princess auto for tools. I used snap on sockets for two years straight when I worked as a mechanic that were from the shop. I noticed the difference big time when having to use mastercraft and princess auto stuff at home as I couldn't afford the crazy price for one set.

I typically buy the maximum stuff from crappy tire more for the ratchets then the sockets. I find the ratchets to be fairly well built and have a good feel to them. I have a princess auto 3/4 pro point that has been replaced 3 times and still is not perfect. The mechanism for the forward and reverse keeps screwing up and making it fairly useless. I have breaker bars for the stupid bolts, I do get those from princess auto and have held up fairly well so far. I hear craftsman is also good and husky had a pretty good lineup as well. Princess auto gets the cheapest stuff from China at the lowest price possible, something has to give for them to achieve that.

Re: Good deal on socket sets at Canadian Tire

princess auto stuff might as well come with a grinder because once you use their stuff and strip a bolt head you'll understand why.

Both the mastercraft maximum and the craftsman stuff is good. I have sets of both i've bought on sale for the same reason pat posted this and they are awesome.
i used one to basically create a VAG specific toolbox. take out all the SAE stuff and use the space for the specialty parts you're missing usually (16mm wrench anyone?) then just throw in trunk and have in case of emergency

Pretty sure that extension I showed you that started to slip and f'd up my filter socket came from princess auto, come to think of it.... Tolerances on that were plain crap.

Picked up several JET sockets when house of tools went under. They are pretty awesome.

This set will usually go on sale once a month for $200. Very good quality stuff (except the vise grips), lifetime warranty, and doesn't skip over all of the metric sizes we need.

Most tools that have a lifetime warranty are decent, otherwise they would go broke. I personally have mostly craftsman but with the odd mastercraft thrown in. I do have a huge pile of specialty tools though.

I use the Canadian Tire app on my iphone, add items you need/want to the shopping list and the app will alert you when they go on sale. When Canadian Tire puts something on sale they really put things on sale. I needed some wrenches and there was a set that went for 124.00 regularly, it was marked down to 49.00. When I scanned it it at the checkout it came up as 65.00 so with the scanning code of conduct I got it for 39.00. I never buy full priced stuff at Canadian Tire...
