  • Older Audi engine tools

    Hey Guys,
I did a search and couldn't find what I was looking for. Does anyone know if there is a place in town that sells the specialty wrenches and tools for the older Audi models? I am looking for a few for my 1994 S4.
    Thanks,
    Andy

If your doing your timing belt and that's what you need special tools for, there was a guy in Calgary that lent me his tools, I just made a post on audiworld, in the original s cars section.

I tried Concept1 first. From what I understand they carry mostly newer tools and from our conversation they buy bulk, typically not one tool. I am looking for the brace for the harmonic balancer (crankshaft locking tool), oil seal puller, the camshaft sprocket locking tool, viscous fan wrench and the spanner. Just a few things to finish the tear down. I can look to audiworld to borrow but will need all these tools again.

                  Hey Andy,

                  Couple questions for you.

                  1) Is the motor out of the car? If so there's an easy way to lock the crank with some simple flat bar drilled to accept flywheel bolts. Check out my thread "No Crank Lock Tool No Problem" and you'll see what I did.

If not, there are always a couple ways around having the crank lock tool (VW 2084) to get your TB job done.

                  2) Can you fabricate or do you have access to people who can? The balancer lockout tool is pretty easy to build if you have the means...

In my experience you don't need a special tool to lock the cam... there are easy work-arounds to deal with that without spending money on tools you'll rarely use.

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask... here or PM!

                    Re: Older Audi engine tools

Thanks for the responses guys. The engine was out of the car. I used a similar method to pry4sno's solution. Right now the head and block are on a bench waiting for the final stages of dis-assembly.

What did you do to lock the cam in place to remove the cam gear/sprocket?

Anyone know of a machine shop in Calgary to get some work done to the head and block?

Couldn't say, my cam bolt came out with the belt still on. It's been suggested that jamming a wrench in there is good enough but I wouldn't recommend such a practice unless absolutely necessary.

Maybe just wait till its all back together and swap the cam seal while installed in the car. Use a bar on the crank bolt, locked out on the ground, and the belt itself to hold everything in place. It's fairly painless that way.
