  • looking for a new daly

alright ladies and gents i am currently driving a 99 bmw 740i with M package have only had it for 6 months now and while the car is as smooth as can be and comfortable for any length trip i do have a few problems with it

    1. heavy on gas 4.4l v8 and a car that weighs 4500 lbs i'm at the gas station once a week with the amount of driving i do and its not cheap about 100 bucks a fill up :(
    2. automatic trans, yea its got steptronic but its not the same
    3. insurance on the pig isn't cheap apparently its a car people like stealing

so with that being said im looking for a new daily, something thats decent on gas (compare to this i think everything is) must have a manual trans (awd would be nice) and it needs to have enough room for me to drive around clients so no 2 doors. If its got room for me and a few friends to stuff our boards into and head up to the mountains that would be a plus.

i have considered a couple of cars Audi a4, nice car i know how to work on and where to get parts from, but i have really been considering the volvo v70R i have always loved that wagon and the more i look into it the more i think its the perfect car, AWD plenty of power 6 sp trans, and plenty of room but i am open to suggestions so please help me out

    looking to spend around 20k

I hear ya on that motor being a pig. My 540i had the same one and boy did I go through gas... I switched to my S4 after that and loved it

I know I'll probably get laughed at for this but what about a Saab wagon?

The V6 turbo pulls hard, tune+exhaust and you're under 5 secs 0-60 in a wagon... all for 15 grand.

The 2 liter turbo ecotec is bulletproof and peppy.

The 9-5's 2.3 liter turbo is peppy and reliable.

They might not be for anyone but they look good (subjective I know), have a decent aftermarket, and can be had for very cheap.

Saabs may have been funny looking cars back in the 80's, but lately their cars have been nothing but clean and tasteful!!! Not exactly sure how they are engine wise and interior, but based on the exterior look, I would own one in a heartbeat!

Engines were good but I think interior has been pretty so-so.

Re: looking for a new daly

Lots of questions to address. Engine reliability: all three engines are fantastic. The 2.3 liter turbo is a Saab engine, its been around for quite some time and is quite reliable in the OG 9-5 and was one of Ward's top ten engines. The 2.0 liter turbo is great as well, been in the 9-3 range since '03 and has been very reliable, a GM engine, probably the most reliable of the three. The 2.8 l V6T has gobs of torque and some good tuning capabilities, was one of Ward's top ten engines in '06. Its pretty cramped in the 9-3s engine compartment so there are some heat issues (coils, expansion tanks) but nothing major.
Interior: the 9-5 has the best built interior, looks slightly dated but is very ergonomic and tight. The 9-3 interior looks decent, is ergonomic but is slightly cheap feeling. Look for '07 and up for the updated interiors that look a little better than pre '07s. The 9-3s have lots of interior squeaks and rattles but the Aero seats are the comfiest seats I've ever sat in (I've sat in my fair share). Both cars may not have he soft touch interiors of Audi and BMW but look just as good. They're better in quality and looks than VW. In '08 the only wagon with XWD was the TurboX but I believe you can get an '09 wagon withXWD (good luck finding one). The FWD is great though, I've never had a single problem. All things aside, you'd be saving approx 10 grand from a similar Audi/BMW wagon. Seems like a no brainer to me. If anyone is interested in the V6T, you're welcome to drive mine.

It's cool to have a Saab guy here who seems to know his stuff. I've always thought they were very cool cars.

I'm here to answer any questions you guys may have! They're great cars, especially at the prices they go for used. I actually saw my first NG 9-5 in the wild today (had seen them at autoshows and at th dealer's lot), it looked great.
