Deuce, that is one of the biggest issues with the distracted driving law, it is super vague, so that it can be used in so many ways.

Exactly! Although LEOs enforce the law as if it is black/white or right/wrong, there is so much grey area in how the laws themselves are written. It is quite unsettling.
In my opinion, laws should leave as little discretion as possible to those enforcing them.
Less discretion could lead to a fairer style of enforcement with less ambiguity and a better understanding of the laws for civilians.

I hear ya... well... sort of. Isn't there is always discretion and ambiguity in laws?
That said... I suppose this "Distracted Driving Law" is likely the traffic law with the most discretion/ambiguity.

Hmmm... then again... with some of the horrendous drivers I see here in Calgary on a daily basis... maybe not.
There are laws/requirements needed to obtain a driver's license... aren't there?

I don't have a huge issue with this, however to try and avoid the bum sometimes I'll pretend to look at my phone or something, when otherwise I wouldn't have. That's my only real issue.

I think the big thing they're trying to accomplish with this is that whole 'you never know when we're watching, so just never break the law' approach.

Was on the news tonight, Calgary Police said they aren't doing this (yet) it was in BC. Maybe your coworker ran in to some opportunistic pan handlers. Or some hipsters reading reddit yesterday decided to make some quick cash.

Quick question, how does one of these people make quick cash when it is a ticket that is given?

hmm, it was a joke, but yes, that would be tough. Luckily I didn't go through with it yesterday.

Regardless, they said they aren't doing it here. Unless of course they lied.

The police do not directly profit from issueing tickets.

You're right about them not profiting, but they do have a daily quota. However, It has been my experience -- and I've been pulled over enough -- That most cops are easy enough to get along with. I suspect that the situation would have made me angry.. bum coming over and saying I was driving while distracted.. however, if you were able to hold back you're anger and say.. "I'm sorry, you're right". You probably wouldn't get a ticket. As an example, I was pulled over in this fall for accelerating rapidly from a set of lights and he said he could charge me with stunting (It was a 50 zone... and I don't really know how fast I ended up at the end of accelerating) I agreed with him and stated that I was just trying to entertain somebody who was at the other side of the intersection was egging me on and that person likely just wanted to hear the engine. This cop is known for not letting anybody off (my insurance agent had passed while I was pulled over and instantly texted me -- "You're f'd!".) In the end, I got a warning.

I'm not saying there aren't jerk cops out there.. but it's not always the cop that causes the ticket to be written.

tell the bum cop to get off the road as he is clearly a distraction to the drivers who are now paying attention to him, and not the light/road/intersection/other cars.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3
