Re: Make.Kony.Famous
Unleash armed soldiers on Kony and his army. An army according to the video, are children. So we are justifying killing children...
Secondly, pretty much only Americans will rise to this call to arms. But let us look back upon US history and where this war is to be fought. In African Jungle against Guerrilla tactics. So last major conflict in Africa, Mogadishu, didn't go so well. If we are basing our opinions upon movies, take a look at Black Hawk Down. Didn't go so hot.
Jungle, Vietnam...
Guerrilla warfare, Afghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam, Somalia. Yup, seems like a solid track record or successful missions in these sorts of conditions.
Anyone care to look upon the past, to see prior conflicts with Kony? He is surprisingly capable, in 2006 he killed an entire unit of US Special Forces trained Guatemalan's, all 40 of them, only 5 LRA children were lost . The US has been on the ground, either in an Intel or a Training or a Supply role, since 2009. Bush was heavily opposed to this, and started the work.
He also has a Cause. The whole LRA started in a post Idi Amin vacuum. When the current President Museveni used his own child miltia to slaughter his way to power, started to slowly eliminate his enemies. One of which was a tribe of which Kony was from. The current president is no angel, he has also committed many sins over the years. Yet, those appear to be forgotten.
Just for the record, I am not Pro-Kony, just anti-viral causes. People act as if, nobody has ever heard of this guy.Last edited by bonfire; 03-07-2012, 12:39 PM.

Re: Make.Kony.Famous
Certainly lots to read on the "Invisible Children" charity... only like 30% of the money actually is spent on the children in Uganda. Thats a little upsetting.
For anyone wanting to support an African charity that actually spends the majority on the children, check out www.nampulastreetkids.org
Its a charity that my family has been involved with for quite a few years; four years ago we went with a group and helped build the dorm/school in Mozambique.

I've been following Invisibile Children for a few years now.
Check out guluwalk.com as well. They raise money and awareness for the same issue. I've done the walk here in Edmonton.
It's crazy to think these things still happen in this day and age with little public awareness.Tint sucks

Here's one for bonfire. I do very much agree with these outlooks. I've been reading about it a bit tonight and this makes a lot of sense. http://justiceinconflict.org/2012/03...-down-a-notch/

Re: Make.Kony.Famous
where do you guys get your literature from? plus when you think about the movement of money you have to remember that governments tax money coming in and out. any organization out there is pretty much a company and the company needs to run so that the kids can keep on getting 30% of the donations that we provide. thinking about the overhead and the people to control that flow of money so that it gets to its destination. it's not really how much percentage of the proceeds go directly to the kids but more so the efficiency of that money making sure it's getting spent wisely. so sure, these guys get money from the donations but it's not really that part that matters it's how much of that money are they getting. and who's to decide how much money is fair for them to take, i.e. enough money to feed his family so he can sustain himself as he goes back and forth organizing teams to help the kids cause to me it seems like this is his life. or invest the money in spreading the word in propaganda which my guess is where all the bulk of the money went to so that everyone out there realizes this **** is going on. cause last time i checked this **** wasn't on tv.drive green ||

Re: Make.Kony.Famous
That is a well written piece, a little bit more eloquent than mine.
I find it interesting that there is a line. A line between, viral serious-ness and meme's. This morning I wake up to see 39 posts about Kony on facebook, then by tonight, I see 28 posts of articles and memes.
I am somewhat excited to actually see what happens on April 20th. Will the half-life that is social causes, become so short that nothing happens or, that people legitimately care about such a thing. Also, who is going to clean up all of those posters?
I am not too concerned about only 30% of their revenue going to the cause. I mean the best charities reach like 60%. I don't think one can expect such efficiency from some hipster. Especially when he has a movie to shoot. Flying to Uganda, plus paying staff can be expensive. He only makes 88K a year, which isn't absurd.
There are plenty of other crazy people out there. Then as that article states, this seems to be a relative peaceful time in Uganda. After the fall of the Last King of Scotland (even during his reign), Uganda has been in a state of chaos.
Again, since when do we rely upon what the local news tells us. Why do we rely upon the news to tell us which causes to fund or support? In Bahrain, the king is still killing protestors in the street, haven't seen that on TV in some time.
