  • Thought from Australia

Happy and sad to be back but here are some thoughts.

Right hand driving is a blast! took about 1 day to get used to as you want to go left but once you get the hang its normal.

Round-a-bouts! my GOD we need these here! they make your life so much easier as traffic just flows.
imagine going down edmonton trail to downtown and instead of lights there is a round-a-about and you just flow right into downtown..

petrol.. ranged from 140-160/litre depending on where we were.. average was about 144/litre.. i only filled up at BPs but this was the oddest thing
regular gas there is 91! mid is 95! and premium is 98!!!!!!!!! i'm honestly not sure why but damn!
cheapest gas was E10 which is just ethanol blended but i never used it since BP didn't have it.

australia is crazy about thier speed limits and road tips. There are photo radar and average speed cameras ALL over the highways.. not just outside cities but everywhere! but they legally have to warn you so if it was a 100 zone and i was doing 110 you'd see the sigh saying speed cameras used ahead.. and you see it on the side of the road and slow down.. i didn't get one photo radar thankfully but i didnt' really speed as i didn't want to have to deal with that crap.. once i got flashed by a cop doing 112 in a 100 zone in the middle of nowhere but that was it..

they also have random speeds on thier highways.. you'll go along and be doing 100. then it says 110.. then literally 5kms later it says 80! it was annoying at first but you get used to it

they love their road work too.. for ANYTHING they shut a lane down! even cutting the grass in the ditch lol! i can't complain was we never really got stuck for more than 3-5 minutes in them so meh..

car i rented was a holden commodore sv6

it was a pretty good car!

aussies love modding cars.. tons of holden car-trucks slammed with v8s and exhausts and lots of modded audis and VWs i saw.

overall a country i could totally move to.. very similiar to canada and the people were great

Gas is 91 there because they use a different grading scale, it ends up being around 87 octane here.

Right hand driving is interesting, i spent 3 weeks in the uk but my car was a left hand drive so it took some getting used to because of old habits.

Roundabouts help sometimes but can also be totally useless, I entountered several throughout europe that were smack in the middle of a highway and you needed to slow down to 30, go around, and speed back up which is just annoying.

Glad you had a good time and welcome back!

      Re: Thought from Australia

Welcome back Ryan!! I found some insane roundabouts in Sydney in my previous trips, the 5 way and 7 way ones are super fun, but I have never actually driven there just been a passenger.

Hoping to spend 3 weeks there come February (will be my third time there) and maybe this time I will drive around. Having friends there means cheap stay but you don't get to see as much of the country.

How many dead Roos did you see on the highways? First time I was there that was the only time I saw one, as roadkill :(
