Stayed at the Honua Kai in Kaanapali beach this past January. Its just north of Lahaina. Absolutely beautiful rooms and just an overal great place to be!
If you want a fancy holiday with lots of fat Americans with large incomes, Kaanapali beach is the place to be. I go there every couple years with my family for a medical conference and it's a great time. If you're looking for more of an authentic Hawaii experience I'd recommend something on the other side of the island in Paia. It's closer to the airport, smaller town, better feel, and cheaper accommodation. If you end up going to Kaanapali (don't get me wrong, it's gorgeous) I'd recommend renting a car and checking out the other side of the island for yourself. A lot of people might suggest taking the Hana highway with a Jeep for a lap around the island. I did this one year and while the views are incredible, be sure everyone in the car is OK with a rough ride and plan to spend an entire day doing the trip.
I'm sure you will have a great time no matter what. It's truly a paradise.
Just got back with the wife from our second trip there. We've stayed in 2 different condo's, both in Kihei in South Maui. Amazing beaches and tons of restaurants and bars in this area. This past trip we stayed in the Kiei Akahi condos right across from Kam 2 beach and it was amazing. Restaurants, bars and beaches within walking distance. I would definitely recommend Kihei. Its fairly inexpensive and lots to do, though its not the fanciest area.
Have a great time!
