  • Blackberry Protect

So my wife discovered her phone was gone from her vehicle today. So I decided to try and find it through the Blackberry Protect app on her phone. I was able to track it to somewhere close to Elbow and 29th Ave. Then I called the police non-emergency line. They stayed on the line tracking it for about 20 minutes. I finally stopped in the parking lot of the Glencoe Club. It turns out a cruiser was within 2 blocks. The chase was on! Within another 10 minutes 2 kids on bikes were caught on the path by the Elbow river. To prove it was my wifes phone I was able to send a message to flash on the screen and ring the phone from the tracking site. Done, case solved! I get the phone back tomorrow.

If i wasn't able to find the phone I could have sent a signal to wipe the phone.

    I love technology!

She isn't quite sure. There was no door or window damage. However the contents of the glove box and centre console were dumped on the passenger seat. No cash was stolen, gps was still there, expensive sunglasses were still on the dash. The cops said there is a rash of kids taking the bus to a neighborhood and checking for unlocked vehicles to take small stuff. Back in February 5 cars on our street got hit including my Jetta and Durango. But then they took a screwdriver to the Durango door and some kind of slim-jim to my Jetta and 3 of my neighbors cars. They didn't take anything from the Durango and only the $20 bill from my registration/insurance wallet. Which was inside the glovebox.

I guess this happens quite often and that is why I was kept on the line for so long tracking the phone before a car was dispatched. I just got lucky that there was a cruiser close to the Glencoe Club. What I find impressive is that the website that Blackberry supplies even shows you the approximate resolution while it is moving. In my case initially it started out with a resolution of the city of Calgary and the more I refreshed the closer it got. Towards the end of the chase the resolution went down to 1.68m. That is like 5 feet! However if you are indoors the resolution triangulates you to the nearest cell tower which could be a couple of clicks away.

After the whole incident everyone in the office started installing the app on their own BBs.

too bad blackberry protect doesn't work on the devices that actually contain sensitive stuff....enterprise devices.

great idea for the app, same as find my iphone...just it makes no god damn sense because its not available for all devices, especially those that need it (work phones using enterprise).

Yes as its an enterprise phone you could remote wipe it, but theres no tracking ability or any of that stuff.

                    Re: Blackberry Protect

True that Blackberrys on BES don't have the tracking feature. But if you lose a corporate BB usually the IT dept will remote wipe it anyway just so that any info won't fall in the wrong hands. Having said that some companies use corporate apps that run on BES that will track the BBs movements. ie delivery drivers or salesmen so that mileage calculations are easy to record.

Thats pretty slick, we used the mobileme app on the Iphone to time a little bike race we had one time.

                          Straight up CSI style activity.

CPS has been pretty great the last time I've called them for complaints re: vandalism and other random phaggotry. Response time has been like 2 mins after I hang up the phone. Crazyness!
