  • Buying from another province

There is another thread about importing going on right now but i was considering getting a GLI from another province.

Is there anyone out there who can shed some experience and thoughts on how they did it and what steps they needed to take before travelling out there to buy the car?

From my research it doesn't sound that difficult:
    - Find car and negotiate a price based on condition and a third party inspection of the car.
    - make a deal and GET IT IN WRITING (make sure to do this after the last fiasco lol)
    - call up insurance and get the VIN put under your insurance for temporary transit for a few days
    - with the updated insurance card bring it to your registry office and get in transit registration
    - buy plane ticket and fly to whereever
    - Do one final inspection and test drive of car and then sign bill of sale
    - drive car home and park it on your driveway or in your garage
    - get full insurance put on it
    - get an out of province inspection (it is for a 2004 GLI)
    - Take the OOP report to the registry office to get if officially registered

Is there anything that i forgot? Anything else that you guys would recommend?

    Thanks!

Nope, you pretty much got it. I do it often. Remember, any sort of crack in the windshield and it will have to be replaced. Pita.

Yeah its not that hard. The only this is, make sure your insurance company will be open the day you are thinking of buying it and make sure they have a call center where you can add vehicles on over the phone. I'm saying this because you cannot put a vehicle on your insurance if you don't own it and show proof of ownership. The way around that is a call center usually because they are recorded they don't require to see a bill of sale right away. So once you're good to go i would then put it on the insurance because you don't wanna pay for those couple days if you're not gonna buy it. Depending on your insurance company they will give you two weeks to bring in your inspection form as well. As for the transit pass, make sure there is a registry open on that day!! Same as insurance, you cant get a transit without the bill of sale. If you can try to go on a weekday cause everyone is usually closed on weekend..

So Kim you are saying that i go to a BC or Ontario registry for example to get the transit registry? I thought it had to be done in Alberta because it is destined to be an Alberta car.
And i am trying to do this on a saturday on thanksgiving weekend so hopefully everywhere will be open, i will give my insurance company a call in the morning and see what they can do for me in terms of putting insurance on it starting on a saturday.

          Re: Buying from another province

I flew to BC and brought a car back. I also drove a car from here to BC and BC residents bought it. From those 2 experiences I would highly recommend NOT trying to do this stuff on a weekend or when things aren't open. Both instances involved fighting with ICBC. In the case where I bought, I needed to make a couple of calls to my insurance provider because the ICBC individual had no idea what she was talking about. Since you aren't selling I won't go in to details with the fiasco, but the buyers were really annoyed with ICBC.

It all worked out in the end but only because I was able to confirm any issue with my provider and my seller was very patience and willing to help me deal with ICBC.

That said, others have not had any issues buying from BC so maybe my experience is isolated.

Oh, for what it's worth, I didn't have to do anything on this end before flying down, and lucky I didn't because the car I flew down for was a POS and I ended up buying a different car altogether. I just called my provider and gave them the VIN and told them I was buying it.

            Re: Buying from another province

Since Alberta is the only place where registration and insurance is separate I'm not sure how it works when you are in a different province. I would probably call and registry and find out. I work for insurance so those registry things are way over my head haha.

                  Re: Buying from another province

in BC you're going to have to be dealing with ICBC. thats a good and a bad thing. On one hand a single agent can do everything for you, on the other they are a useless gov't organization.

you can try and do stuff on weekends with them, but i'd strongly suggest shooting for a friday to ensure you can get access to their full suite of services and not forced to wait until the Monday.

my dad bought his vette from a guy in bc last summer, he put a spare AB plate on it, drove it to calgary, got it inspected (oop was done at calgary autoworks, they were the least expensive from the research i did and had it done in a few hours) then he registered and insured the car. thats it thats all

                        Re: Buying from another province

                        OK BC....

                        1. find car
                        2. get VIN
                        3. Phone Insurance provider
                        4. Insure car
                        5. Buy said car
                        6. You will likely have to go to ICBC with current owner because there's some crap they have to do to please ICBC
                        7. Get transit permit (I was stopped on my way home and they checked it, they also made sure I had insurance on it)
                        8. Get OOP
                        9. Fix something stupid that makes it not pass (mine almost failed because the steering wheel was less than 13 cm)
                        10. Enjoy
