  • how long before gas would go bad?

hey guys, i have a 5 gallon drum of VP fuel sitting at home, any idea if it would go bad (you would not want to use it in a vehicle) after a certain period of time?

If it has'nt been treated with fuel stabiliser...gas generally seperates after a few months...from my experience
Here's an article I found though.

higher octane fuels are mixed with chemicals with higher and lower flashpoints to create a specific octane rating that has an optimal burn rate. VP fuels generally last up to 6 months (without freezing) in an open container. if the container has not been open it will last for waaaaaay longer. I've had VP jugs that i've used over a year old, no problems. I've experienced knocking and misfire issues with racing fuel that has been open after even 1 month. so use your discression on how it's stored. it has to do with a few different variables, including heat changes which contribute to condensation in an open jug. other issues are evaporation of essential chemicals (specifically higher octane mixtures which contain toluene or xlyene).

so the short answer to your question is... does the fuel burn? yes, of course haha. but does it have the same antiknock rating? most likely not if it's very old. so use your discression. if you are running race fuel then you have a proper tunning solution to monitor knock... therefore, do so.

storing in calgary will allow it to last a lot longer than say Vancouver just due ot the humidity. you should be good with it in a heated garage.
