Re: RS4 or new Golf R

    bad badge lol

i'd probably take the RS4.. the audi build quality is easily 5x better than VWs.. IMO anyways.. the new Vws are pretty damn good tho

finding a used RS4 in canada is a PITA tho.. USA is OK and probably a ton cheaper too!

how much are RS4s going for now? under 40k?

Re: RS4 or new Golf R

      Love the RS4

But, I think the new S4 is actually pretty comparable and maybe better car overall, has the RS4 come down so much and is the S4 not yet available used? Feels like an RS4 is still worth 55k+? I believe you could pick up an '11 S4 and have a newer car better maintenance and comparable drive!! Have you seen the one Bart's dad got, once you sit in it, hard to argue.

Also, did you consider picking up a Maserati Quattroporte, maybe in the US, also in your budget 4.2L V8 hard to not enjoy it, and more rare, more looks.

Also think there could be other options out there, maybe you're not a BMW fan, but hard to discount as you could pick up a car for a fair bit less, with as good performance and driving characteristics, lots of luxury, certainly a Golf cannot compare. M3 or M5 is in the comparable budget.

Re: RS4 or new Golf R

Thanks for the replies. Its not so much the budget but the fact that I want AWD. Once you have it its tough to go back. Thats why I haven't considered an M3 or M5.
Not a huge BMW fan though either. The new S4 is great, however more than I want to spend. Used RS4's range in price from $55K USD down to as low as $35K for a higher mileage car. Even at that you would be into the car for well over $40K cdn once all is said and done.

Re: RS4 or new Golf R

I'd do the R if its for a daily. Good on fuel, warranty, and easily tune-able. The rs4 is a beautiful car but it would be getting into its expensive maintenance intervals & the wear and tear parts (suspension components, etc) are going to have to be replaced. Plus the R is 5-6 years newer.

Re: RS4 or new Golf R

I dunno if I would get a high mileage RS4 then! High mileage high performance engines are not a recipe for success?

S4's are available used out of the US already... brings the price down a bit.

no b8 RS4 brent so maybe you got mistaken

unless the dude threw a RS4 badge on then =ghey

things to think about on the rS4

                        carbon buildup due to FSI
suspension issues due to the magnetic suspension
                        expensive as fark brakes!

i think thats about it.. could be more.

I have trouble finding a $40k golf "good bang of the buck". You're getting into STI or EVO money at that point!

                          RS4 avant. I'll be jelly.

                            Derek,
I just picked up a B6 S4, and one of my best friends drives an RS4. He took me out in it again this weekend, and there is no comparison. Defs not anything like a 300HP golf, as there is no turbo spool. It just pulls, and pulls, and pulls. The brakes are amazing, the handling is amazing, the whole thing is amazing. granted, it is a whore to maintain, but as a VW employee i can only assume you also have access to the audi parts bin as well. Buy the RS4, you wont be disappointed.

I pretty much have the same cons on my list, except to add to the VW: all the reviews have said it's not as much fun to drive as the GTI & it's hard to get excited about a car no one really knows anything about.

The Audi: I feel like it would be a ticking time bomb, but each time i hear one - I have a stupid grin on my face.

I also have a blue on pre-order, we will see if pricing works out or else it's back to the debate between an A3, GTI, or keep the SUV.

Buy an RS4 Derek. Then we can get some 2-for-1 deals going when ours both break down.

I don't have one yet, but wouldn't be going for another .:R over an RS4. I guess if this is really going to be a DD... then maybe... but for all out awesomeness... RS4.

PS. Got passed by a matte-black RS4 Wagon in Germany last week on the Autobahn... nearly blew my wad all over the windshield.
