Has not yet been mentioned, but there is the Jetta/Golf sportwagon as an option and there are manuals and TDIs to choose from.

What about Saab? The 9-3 Combi kinda fits the criteria and your budget. Its available in manual and is xwd.
I have no idea about reliability on your side of the pond but on this side its fine.

Getting parts for a Saab is a nightmare

Well I don't be working on this car myself so finding parts is not a big concern. However, I'd like to avoid buying from a company that is basically in bankruptcy Just don't feel like Saab will be around in the future, and not sure that their focus right now is on building a world class car, but rather just staying afloat.

Fiancee and I went and checked out the X1 and its pretty nice except the interior (1-series?) is kinda crap, as is the automatic transmission. Apparently manual 3-touring's aren't that rare according to the sales guy at Calgary BMW so we may keep our eyes open for one. Also checked out the Cayenne and it was badass even with the 8 speed automatic, which is super aggressive.

8Speed, did you find it was constantly searching for gears?

No it didn't feel that way. When you're accelerating, it holds the gears as long as it can, right to redline, feels strong.

When you let off the pedal, it doesn't immediately try to shift-- but kind of holds the gear for a while, which is actually noticeable, because if you were nearing redline then it will be a lot like a manual in that the engine stays loud, even when you are off the gas. This helps when you are just temporarily lifting off the gas for a corner or to moderate your speed, and want to resume acceleration. Keeps it from searching when you just want to adjust speed.

Once you brake, or wait a while, the revs fall too low, it will shift down but it doesn't feel harsh. Its a very smooth and quick automatic, not quite DSG but still the best I've ever driven.
