Yeah, well you can pit the cones and the cups. But only punters do that.
I have seen some utterly terrifying hubs. Even with sealed, they can truly **** things good.
Sealed bearings are so slow! So much drag. Spin an old cup and cone BB, spins like you are running on mercury. These new Externals spin like a bag of hammers.
But in return they take a lot less maintenance. Which is nice, especially when racing in less than ideal conditions.
There is a cup and cone external BB in existance. Some German guy, who I was wrenching for at a race, had some custom machined. It was stunning, spun like a top, didn't touch it for any of the 7 days, and it was wet pretty much every day. It was a touch rough, as he was running Ceramics and those don't need much if any lube. But I would put one of those in every bike I have.
